  1. Trojan Athletics Pre-Season Parent/Athlete Information

HOME BASED SCHOOL • Student Athletes must be regularly enrolled as a member of the student body of their athletic school • Student Athletes must participate at their board assigned school • School assignment is based on residence of LEGAL GUARDIAN • Affidavits of Guardianship are not permissible for participation • Student’s athletic school is determined for the year where they first practice/tryout/participate in a sport

  3. Enrollment/Residence • A Student may not have 2 residences for eligibility purposes • Resident change requires a bona fide move of the entire family, vacating the previous address. The change must be permanent • Students may not participate in sports at 2 separate schools within the LEA in the same school year • Attendance is regulated by CCS; athletes must attend 85% attendance rate (less than 13 days absent)

  4. Eligibility • A minimum load of course work must be passed in the previous semester. 3 out of 4 in block scheduling • All students must maintain a minimum load of course work (3 courses) • including seniors. Please check with student services for questions. • Students must meet local promotion standards and maintain a minimum amount of credits.

  5. Medical/Sports Medicine Requirements • A valid, up to date physical is required to participate. Physicals are required to be update annually and must be completed by a licensed physician, NP or PA. • An up to date physical is required for off season workouts • Students absent from practice for 5 or more days for illness or injury must be release by a licensed physician. • The athletic training staff will make decision based on the well-being for the long term care of the student athlete

NCHSAA Regulations • Students are eligible to participate in high school athletics for no more than 8 consecutive semesters beginning with the first entry into 9th grade • A student must not be charged/convicted of a felony in NC or any state, or be adjudicated as a delinquent for an offense that would be a felony. • Student may not participate if he/she becomes 19 before 8/31 • Falsifying information for eligibility will cause an ineligible status for 365 days

NCHSAA Regulations • Ineligible students may not be on a roster, practice or participate with any team • Sunday practice or gatherings are strictly prohibited • Any athlete ejected or disqualified for unsporting actions will be required to complete the NFHS Sportsmanship course at the athletes expense.

  8. Trojan Athletics • Athletic paperwork: • Available on the website, required for participation, fully electronic • Must be completed to receive an Orange Card • Must be renewed each school year • ORANGE CARD: EVERY SEASON • ATHLETIC PAPERWORK: ONCE A SCHOOL YEAR

  9. Trojan Athletics • Criminal Charges/Alcohol/Drugs • Zero tolerance for alcohol and drug use • Suspesions are mandatory • May not participate in athletics while charges are pending • Any charge is required to be reported to the school immediately

Trojan Athletics • Quitting a Sport/Being Removed from a team • A player that has quit or removed from the team for any reason may not participate in another sport until the season for that team has ended • Players that quit a sport or are removed may not be able to attend events involving that team the remainder of the school year

  11. Trojan Athletics • Character/Responsibility/Sportsmanship/Conduct • Athletes are held to the highest standard • Any action a coach or administrator deems detrimental may result in removal from the athletic team • Sportsmanship is expected 100% of the time

Trojan Athletics • Parent Expectations • Support you student athlete • Promote a POSTIVE environment at contests • Get involved with the Trojan Club • Volunteer • Monitor student athletes grades/attendance • Follow the team rules • Be a positive roll model • Maintain a high level of sportsmanship • Your ticket purchase does not give you the right to coach from the stands, berate the referees or disrupt the educational environment in any way. Your ticket allows you to watch your team and cheer for them in a positive manner

Trojan Athletics • Chain Of Command: • Player/Coach; Parent/Coach; Parent/AD; Parent/Admin; Parent/County AD • 1: Never address a coach regarding a complaint/concern after a contest. • 2: The student athlete/coach conversation should be the first line of communication • 3: Parents may contact the coach to address questions or concerns. The best form is email • 4: Playing time is fully at the coach’s discretion and not for discussion

  14. Concussions • Concussion Awareness: • Concussions are an invisible injury • Proper diagnosis requires honesty from athletes and parents • Athletes may not be sure what they are feeling when they have a concussion • Sports Medicine staff is here to HELP • Never hide symptoms of a concussion

Concussions • Prevention: • Proper equipment and techniques • Decrease head to head impacts • Look for signs and symptoms • Parents/players/coaches/teammates and ATC share the responsibility as a TEAM • Each player must have a baseline cognitive test prior to participation • Educate yourself: Gfeller-Waller Concussion Awareness Act

Gfeller-Waller Concussion Awareness Act • Mandatory Education for all Coaches, Players, Parents, Volunteers. • Includes: • Written info detailing concussion recognition • Description of the effects, short and long term of concussions • Medical Return to play protocol • All staff/parents/atheltes involved in interscholastic activity must receive concussion information annually • The Gfeller-Waller form must be signed by all annually

  17. Signs and Symptoms of a Concussion • Headaches Confusion • Pressure in head Memory Loss • Nasuea/vomiting Not feeling “right” • Balance problems Neck Pain • Loss of consciousness Low Energy • Seizures Drowsy/Sad • Blurred vision Nervous/Irritable • Ligh/noise sensitivity Sleep pattern change

  18. Return to Play • Must be symptom free without medication for 24 hours • Day 1: Low level physical activity • Day 2: Moderate level of physical activity • Day 3: Heavy non-contact physical activity/sport specific drills • Day 4: Non Contact sport specific practice • Day 5: Full contact practice • After completion of Day 5, the parents and ATC must sign a summary form stating that the completion of the RTP has been successfully completed and no further treatment is necessary.
