  16. Creer vs. no creer To state something that you believe use the indicative. (review: this is an affirmation) Yo creo que Jill es intelligente. Yo creo que UNC ganará el tornamento de NCAA When I negate the verb I switch to the subjunctive: No creo que ella sea estúpida. No creo que Gonzaga gane el tornamento de NCAA.

  21. 2) Summary: • Use the indicative for impersonal expressions of certainty (expressions that state facts) • Use the subjunctive for impersonal expressions of uncertainty (expressions of what is possible, doubtful, a good idea) • 3) Practice: • You are talking to the most annoying freshmen imaginable: Use impersonal expressions to tell me 3 facts about what he/she does Ex: It’s true that he doesn’t stop talking, and 3 impersonal expressions to tell him what he should do Ex: It’s important that you stop talking.

  23. Activity Name: NCAA predictions • 1) Important Vocab: verbs of certainty: creer, pensar, saber • 2) Summary: • Use the indicative: Knowing, Thinking, Believing are actions of affirmation. It’s a fact that you know think or believe something. That doesn’t mean it’s correct, it just means it exists. These statements get the indicative (present, preterite, future) • Ex: Yo creo que Duke ganará el torneo de NCAA • Use the subjunctive: To negate a statement of affirmation (saying what you don’t believe) adds doubt and therefore gets the subjunctive: • Ex: No creo que Duke pueda ganar el torneo de NCAA

Then tell me 4 things that you want/look for in college/ future classes. Example, I am looking for classes with less than 20 students. • List 3 qualities of a friend. Ex: I have a friend that is reliable, etc. Tell me 3 qualities that you look for in a friend.

Write which verb tense would be used for each AND a sample sentence for each (sentence in Spanish) • a) Recommendation/ piece of advice with an explanation ex: I recommend that you take her to a movie • b) Impersonal expressions about what is good, bad, better important, etc. to do • c) What you BELIEVE will happen (Ex:I believe things will work out. I believe you were correct)

Additional Notes/ Practice: Phrasing questions with doubt or certainty: • Summary: In a question containing an expression of doubt, the speaker chooses between the subjunctive and the indicative, depending on the meaning he or she wishes to convey: • ¿Crees que ellos vengan mañana? – Speaker doesn’t think they will arrive tomorrow • or • ¿Crees que ellos vendrán mañana?- Speaker thinks they will arrive tomorrow

  34. 6) Phrasing questions • In a question about believing, the speaker chooses between the subjunctive and the indicative, depending on the meaning he or she wishes to convey: Ex: ¿Crees que ellos vengan mañana? – The speaker is doubtful, ¿Crees que ellos vendrán mañana? – The speaker thinks it is likely • Create a question for both possible meanings:
