What we do well Rob Ferguson & Paddy Salter (Newham Sixth Form College) May 2012 • IAG prior to enrolment - interviews • Enrolment IAG • To liaise with tutors, teachers and managers, to provide a comprehensive service while students on course • Work with our partnership universities, on activities around mock interviews and writing a personal statement, this has involved working with Queen Mary, London , Middlesex University and Greenwich university. • SAMDA – Student Assisted Medical and Dental Application - a student led organisation from Barts and London Medical School.

What we do well Rob Ferguson & Paddy Salter (Newham Sixth Form College) May 2012 • Work in partnership with high profile employers to: • raise awareness • aspirations • understanding of careers • employability skills Examples include: • Law careers day with Royal Bank of Scotland • CV workshop delivered by Barclays • Employer led days with Price Waterhouse Coopers and KPMG • Pilot with Accenture, Global consultancy firm to deliver an interactive, fun, character building, employability programme • Olympic opportunities

  4. Challenges Rob Ferguson & Paddy Salter (Newham Sixth Form College) May 2012 Pre-entry interview studentshave misconceptions about entry requirements. Understanding the importance of the GCSEs for those on Level 3 courses and entry to higher education and employment. Apprenticeships – entry levels, jobs roles, progression opportunities. Health and Social Care – understanding of requirements for Nursing degree courses and university selection. Student Finance– difficulty with online applications and income-assessed applications.

IAG: Preparing for HE Year 12 • Interview and enrolment • Progress Review • Understanding entry requirements, attainment targets and preparation for HE • Prepare Oxbridge/Medical applicants • HE assignment • Review of predicted grades vs. actual grades in previous year by subject • June: Start application on UCAS Apply Rob Ferguson & Paddy Salter (Newham Sixth Form College) May 2012

IAG: The Application Journey Rob Ferguson & Paddy Salter (Newham Sixth Form College) May 2012 Key milestones: Year 13 • Choices – review, check, IAG. • Personal statement support • Application completion deadline by October half-term • Deadlines for the number of applications submitted weekly by tutors • Entire application reviewed and checked – Course Choice Form • Entry requirements including AS/Yr 1 grades, predicted grades, level 2 English and maths reviewed and checked • Unrealistic course choices referred back to student – clear criteria set for tutors and students to follow
