Strategic Assessment of the Child Care Nutrition Environment • Advisory Group of Statewide Child Care Stakeholders Convened By: • California Department of Education, Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell • California Health and Human Services Agency Secretary Kim Belshé • Driving Force: Children Enter School at Risk for Obesity • 25% of 2-5 year olds overweight/at risk for overweight • Children spend a lot of time in child care • ½ million California preschool children in licensed child care; more in informal care • Building on School Wellness Momentum

California Fresh Start Program Evaluation Report • California Fresh Start Program (CFSP) Pilot • Evaluation conducted by UC Berkeley, Center for Weight and Health in 2006-07 • Findings and recommendations from 61 randomly selected elementary, middle and high schools • Fresh Start Program Exceeded Expectations • Fresh F/V offered to students doubled • Variety of Fruits and Vegetables Increased • School Breakfast Participation increased 2%; nearly $1 million federal dollars to California • Report available April 2008 • On California Healthy Kids Resource Center website: http://www.californiahealthykids.org Mary Lussier, mlussier@cde.ca.gov

Child Nutrition Information and Payment System (CNIPS) • User Acceptance Testing • Conduct May 2008 with key sponsors • CNIPS Rollout • June 23, 2008: Tentative date • CDE will distribute User IDs and passwords to sponsors • Sponsor Training on CNIPS system • June 23 - July 28, 2008: Tentative dates to begin training • More trainings to be conducted in Fall 2008 • School Nutrition Program claims • July 2008 claimsand thereafter are submitted and processed using the new CNIPS system • Claims for months prior to July 2008 will be submitted via the existing paper claim process • See Web page:http://www.cde.ca.gov/ls/nu/cn/
