Background (and significance) Section • Things to remember: • As your progress through the literature review be sure to highlight in summary sentences where (in italics) what the paragraph establishes in terms of • This identifies a gap • This is why the gap is an important problem • This leads to our central hypothesis • This supports our working Aim X hypothesis • If you don’t have paragraphs that have these points in Section B then you have not achieved the intended goals for Section B

Broader impact statement • Writing a good Broader Impact statement is more than: • “A simple listing of outreach activities” • “Reference to inclusion of research personnel who are members of underrepresented groups” • An excellent Broader Impact Statement should include: • “carefully consider ways to incorporate: • rigorous • meaningful • innovative • …broader impacts activities (e.g., broadening participation) that integrate with the research being proposed. • Where should broader impacts statements be addressed: • Project Summary: as an explicit subsection • Project Description: as an integrated part of the narrative • Elaborate what was stated in the Project Summary • Results of Prior Results section • Both the PI’s and any CoPi’s • Source: http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2008/nsf08044/nsf08044.jsp?govDel=USNSF_25
