External Environmental Scan TRENDS Economic: unfunded mandates, globalization, aging population, cost of higher education, deficits, foreign manufacturing, population trend, Mendon vs. Upton economics, infrastructure issues in towns, growth, age demographics, proposition 2 ½, income/wealth gap, etc…. Political: changing legislature, aging population, war in middle east, overrides, apathy, tolerance, unfunded educational mandates, DOE commissioner, etc… Social: changing family structures, character education, diverse culture, substance abuse,sense of entitlement, parenting styles, safety concerns, working in teams, lack of personal responsibility, etc… Educational: longer school day, special education, globalization, critical thinkers, gifted and talented programs, staff shortages, magnet schools, technology, Computer based learning, etc… Mendon-Upton Regional School District

To continuously improve the process of teaching and learning through examination of curriculum, instruction and assessment Pre K-12 • To develop and implement a coherent and articulated Pre K-12 curriculum • To implement and expand instructional strategies to meet the needs of all learners • To demonstrate improved student performance through the use of a variety of assessment tools • Goal 2. To continuously improve communication between, among and with the school, home and community • To improve vertical and horizontal communication and collaboration among school staff • To engage families to be proactively involved in their child’s education Pre K-12 • To reach out to the community to involve them in the educational process Mendon-Upton Regional School District

To continuously work with the community to develop a realistic, fundable multiyear financial plan for the school district • To explore additional funding and partnership options • To develop a plan to address continuous population growth • To work with the community to develop a plan to address operational needs • Goal 4. Establish a committee to research and articulate an educational model • To develop an effective and viable educational model that supports the present and future developmental and learning needs of all our students • Goal 5. Develop a space needs plan • To develop a plan to address the facility needs as a result of the changes in population • To develop a plan to address facility needs that reflect the district’s educational model Mendon-Upton Regional School District

Next Steps • Establish Action Committees • Develop the specific course of action needed to accomplish each goal. • Communicate the Strategic Plan • Report back to the School Committee with the results from the action committees • Maintain a strong commitment to our Strategic Plan • Periodically present a status report to the school committee on the Strategic Plan Mendon-Upton Regional School District
