  4. DIRECTSMain Aims and Outcomes • To determine how various systems work under the range of conditions found on UK roads • To make sure equipment from different suppliers is compatible • To provide guidance to local authorities and for the proposed national charging scheme for lorries.

  5. DIRECTSWhat will be tested? • Roadside equipment ) from • on-board units ) several suppliers • Both DSRC and GPS systems • Back office and administrative systems, including dummy billing and enforcement notices

  9. DIRECTS - When? • Volunteer recruitment started • Equipment being tested • Roadside structures in place by March 2003 • On site testing late Spring 2003 • Trial starts second half of 2003 for 12 months

  10. What Happens in Leeds after DIRECTS • The City Council will not consider introducing any type of charging scheme until major planned traffic and transport improvements, including Supertram and the completion of the Inner Ring Road are in place and their impacts are assessed.
