The golden age of jazz • In the years between 1939 and 1948, William Gottlieb's cumbersome Speed Graphic press camera captured the elusive moments of what he called "a golden age" of jazz--the era of Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Mary Lou Williams, Eddie Condon, Charlie Parker, Nat King Cole. (Stokes) • He photographed jazz musicians performing in nightclubs, concert halls, recording sessions, and sometimes even in moments of relaxation backstage or in their dressing rooms.

  5. Nat King Cole • Nat's early career was mainly piano playing. • He played a lot in a trio with one of his brothers. • The trio did not have a drummer because Nat's piano playing kept rhythm so well. • By the time Nat was 20 his music was known in every beer joint in L.A.
