TUHS Medicinal Garden main vision and goals • Get back to the “roots” of pharmacy and medicine • Promote health and wellness within the community • Establish long lasting relationships with the community outside Temple University • Provide lessons about sustainable organic gardening, companion planting, and the pharmaceutical link between nature and household and personal products • Enhance our natural medicine knowledge base, enabling us to provide future patients with natural therapies

Current vision: schematic • Elongated U beds will house soil in a 2’ high retaining wall • Front “gate” trees will be ginkgos planted 30’ apart trunk to trunk (path distance of 22’) • The path width at the middle from middle circle to inner U bed is a distance of 13’, allowing the space for addition of two benches in the center circle. • Distance from sidewalk to ginkgo beds = 4’ • Entire outside diameter of larger oval including path = 31’ long x 42’ wide. • Inside diameter of larger oval = 23’x34’ • Path width at entrance/exit = 6’ • Distance from ginkgo beds to outer ellipse = 12’ (24’ from sidewalk) • Distance from inside of U bed to middle circle (length) is about 7.5’. Plant list: Ginkgo • Ginkgo biloba trees at garden entrance • “Fossil tree" since it is the last of its kind, with no close relatives; The Ginkgo is the sole living link between between ferns and conifers • Widely known in medicine to aid in preventing memory loss, easing tinnitus, improving blood flow  • Vivid yellow fall color • PROS: Good for urban landscape: tolerant to pollution, variety of soil types, pH, nearly pest-free and is resistant to storm damage; • CONS: Requires well draining conditions (does not tolerate over-watering) • Plant males (females produce smelly fruit) • Ginkgo biloba grows to a size of 25-75'+ high and 25-60' wide. Plant list: Witch Hazel • Shrub or small tree, growing as a dense, multi-stemmed clump reaching heights of 20 – 30 feet and widths of 15 to 20 feet.; however the shrub form typically does not grow over 12 – 15 feet tall • It should be planted on the north side of homes and north-facing slopes where semi-shaded habits are more common • Early European settles observed Native Americans using American witchhazel to find underground sources of water • The bark, leaves, and twigs of witch hazel are all high in tannins, giving this plant astringent properties • Astringent tannins in witch hazel temporarily tighten and soothe aching varicose veins or reduce inflammation • A cloth soaked in strong witch hazel tea reduces swelling and can relieve the pain of hemorrhoids and bruises • Witch hazel lotions are useful on rough, swollen, gardener's or carpenter's hands • Used in teas to treat swimmers ear, etc., Source:http://www.fs.fed.us/wildflowers/plant-of-the-week/hamamelis_virginiana.shtml http://health.howstuffworks.com/wellness/natural-medicine/herbal-remedies/witch-hazel-herbal-remedies.htm
