Background: Malaria • There are over 500 million cases of malaria each year. 90% of these cases occur in sub-Saharan Africa. • Over 1 million people lose their life to malaria each year – the vast majority children under the age of five. • We lose a child to malaria every 30 seconds; 3,000 children a day. • Malaria is a preventable, treatable and beatable disease.
Background: Malaria Symptoms: • chills • nausea • sever headaches • muscle pain and weakness • high fever (106oF) Can lead to death, brain damage, or other infections
Comprehensive Approach Prevention + Education + Communication + Treatment = Sustainable victory over malaria
Prevention • Continue distributing life-saving bed nets • Eliminate mosquito breeding vectors
Education • Teach families to protect themselves, how to identify symptoms and where to seek treatment • Train more community health workers to serve remote areas
Communication • Utilize existing/effective communication vehicles, including radio, cell phones, and word-of-mouth
Treatment • Equip hospitals and clinics with better medicine, adequate resources, and diagnostic tools • Increase access to care, and the capacity to treat more patients
