  1. What Can I Do to Help This Local Church Grow? • God is a Good God; He is “So Good!” • He created us in His Own “image,” Genesis 1:26-27. • He provides us with every imaginable blessing, James 1:17. • He sent His Son to die for us to make possible our Salvation, John 3:16.

  2. Further Evidence of the Goodness of God: • From the foundation of the world God had a plan for human redemption, Ephesians 1:3-4. The Plan involved: * the Death of Christ, Hebrews 2:9. * The Gospel of Christ, I Cor. 15:1-4. * The Church purchased with the blood of Christ, Acts 20:28; Eph. 3:3-4,6,10-11

  3. “Church” Used in Two Primary Senses: • The Church in the Universal Sense, Matthew 16:18; Hebrews 12:22-23. • The church in the Local Sense, • I Corinthians 1:1, “the church of God at Corinth..” • Rev. 1:10-11, “the seven churches which are in Asia.”

  4. Fact: God wants His children to be Members of Sound Local Churches • Several N.T. books written to local churches. Rom. 1:6-7; 16:16; I Cor. 1:1; 2 Cor. 1:1; Gal. 1:2; Phil. 1:1, etc. • “Church” generally refers to a specific group of people who had committed themselves to the Lord and to each other.

  5. “Church” in local Sense: • Numbers were kept, Acts 2:41; 4:4. • Servants were selected, Acts 6:1-4. • Note Example of Saul, Acts 9:26; Phil. 4:9. • Discipline was practiced, I Cor. 5:4-5. • Worship was Corporate, I Cor. 14:23. • Shepherds were appointed to watch for souls, Acts 20:17,28; I Peter 5:3. • Note: Membership in a local church gives one greater opportunity to use his abilities.

  6. Local Church Growth An Every Member Responsibility! • Eph. 4:11: “And he gave some apostles, and some prophets, and some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers. • V. 12: “For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ. • V. 13. “Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto the perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ.

  7. V. 14. “That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; V. 15. “But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ. V. 16. “From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.

  8. Examine Eph. 4:11-16 • V. 11: Apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers. • The work of the church, v. 12 – perfecting the saints the work of the ministry, the edifying of the body of Christ. • The objective, vs. 13-14 – till we all come in the unity of the faith….

  9. Examine Eph. 4:11-16, con’t • V. 15: the process – “Speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head even Christ. • V. 16: The parties involved – “From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the measure of everypart, making increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.”

  10. Important Fact: • Every “joint” or every member of your physical body is affected by the general health of your body as a whole, and the health of your body as a whole is affected by the health of each member of your body. • Application: You, as a member of this congregation, should have a vested interest in the soundness, growth, and well being of this congregation as a whole – and Vice Versa!

  11. What Can I Do to Help? • Attend Every Service Possible, Acts 2:42; 20:7; I Cor. 11:33; Heb. 10:25. • Arrive Early for Worship! Titus 2:14; Psalm 122:1. • Resolve to get as much as possible out of the Bible study and worship. • “Learn to squeeze the juice out of a sermon.”

  12. What Can I Do to Help? Con’t • Submit to the oversight of the elders, Hebrews 13:17; I Thess. 5:12-13. • Resolve all differences you may have with other members! Phil. 4:1-2; Matt. 5:23; 18:15-17. • Stand as it were at the foot of the cross and look into the face of that One Who died for us; then join hands in praise to him instead of feeling animosity!

  13. What Can I Do to Help? Con’t. • Talk the work up! Acts 8:4. • Meet and Greet Visitors! Matt. 7:12 • Practice Hospitality! Rom. 12:13 • Love One another as Christ loved us, John 13:34-35! • “Be at Peace among yourselves, I Thes. 5:13. • Pray for each other and the congregation as a whole! Col. 4:3; I Thess. 5:25; Acts 21:5.

  14. Conclusion: • Christ built the church, Matt. 16:18; it is our responsibility, as members, to build it up! • The N.T. church consists of “saved” people, Acts 2:47. • Those “saved” in Acts 2 were “saved” upon hearing and obeying the gospel, which is God’s power to save, Rom. 1:16.
