  2. Presented by: Dirk van Dyk – CEO of the National Tooling Initiative – Intsimbi Programme – a multi - stakeholder intervention in the Tool, Die and Mould manufacturing (TDM) sector of SA.

  3. The TDM Sector is represented by the Toolmaking Association of South Africa (TASA) and its implementation agency –National Tooling Initiative Programmes (NTIP). Intsimbi is the brand name and Governance Structure of the NTI Programme. The programme is a partnership between industry and government through the dti (IPAP2).

  4. INTSIMBI OBJECTIVES: The Rehabilitation and Growth of the South African- Tool, Die and Mould Making (TDM) industry as a key growth stimulator for Manufacturing and Technical Skills Development in the SADEC region.

  5. Skills Erosion & Job losses Critical shortage of Designers, Artisans, Engineers and Project Managers in sector. Radical changes in Skills Value Chain. Technology Stagnation Lack of recapitalization. Lack of focussed R&D. Loss of Capacity - Industry demand growing, SMME quantity declining Loss of Competitiveness ( China, India, EU) Absence of BBBEE transformation in TDM industry Increasing imports – decreasing exports TDM sector distress drivers.

  6. 1 Overview and Background • In the Southern African context “INTSIMBI” is the Xhosa word for : “METAL” • The TDM sector as a key support sector to manufacturing declined over the past 20 years in terms of its capacity, skills base, and technology status. Currently the local automotive and packaging industry demands from the local TDM supplier base has shrunk to below 20%. TDM demand for these key sectors currently exceed R6B per annum.
