  1. Lesson 4A.2

  2. Developing an Understanding of Time Lesson 4A.2

  3. Developing an Understanding of Time Objectives • Demonstrate knowledge of time • Apply strategies to break down assignments into their components

  4. Developing an Understanding of Time Agenda • Complete Metacognitive Activator • Work on “Understanding the Sweep of Time” handout • Try the “Break it Down” handout • Complete Metacognitive Wrap-Up

  5. Developing an Understanding of Time Metacognitive Activator • Estimate the time it will take you to complete the math handout • How accurate was your prediction?

  6. Developing an Understanding of Time Why is time management challenging? Our lives are busy! • Tasks we “have-to” do (especially during the school year!) • Tasks we “want-to” do Time is a tricky thing! • Sometimes concrete • weeks, hours, minutes • Sometimes abstract • later, soon

  7. Developing an Understanding of Time

  8. Developing an Understanding of Time The Benefits of Time Management: • Accomplish more! • Reduce stress! But it can be challenging…. • Time is sometimes abstract • in a bit, in a while, later • Life is full of distractions

  9. Developing an Understanding of Time The 3 components of understanding the sweep of time: Knowledge of time Knowledge of the task Estimation ability

  10. Developing an Understanding of Time Knowledge of Time • What helps to develop a knowledge of time? • Internal clock (e.g., hunger, tiredness, growing) • A clock on the wall (e.g., seconds, minutes, hours, days, months, years) Example: You are supposed to meet your teacher after school for extra help. You have 15 minutes before the meeting and decide to hang out with some friends. After what seems like 10 minutes have passed, you check the time, and realize that it has been 30 minutes! Your teacher already left by the time you get to the classroom because he/she assumed you were not coming.

  11. Developing an Understanding of Time Solutions for Developing a Better Sense of Time • Keep a log of the times when you are hungry, go to bed, and feel like taking a nap. • Review the log and take note of any patterns you see (e.g., bedtimes on weekdays versus week nights). • During the day, stop during 3 different activities and guess the time without looking at a clock. How accurate were you?

  12. Developing an Understanding of Time Knowledge of the Task • What helps to develop a knowledge of the task? • Breaking down an assignment into its parts. • AND knowing how long each part will take. • WHILE taking into account previous experiences with similar activities. Example: You have a science test in 2 weeks and your teacher did not give you a study guide. You remember creating strategy cards for your previous science test, so you decide to make strategy cards again. You set aside 2 hours over the weekend to create strategy cards for the upcoming science test. It ends up taking you 4 hours – twice as long as you thought it would take!

  13. Developing an Understanding of Time Solutions for Developing a Knowledge of the Task • Look closely at the requirements of an assignment. • Break down the assignment into smaller parts. Ask yourself: • Have I done any of these parts before? • How long did they take? • If YES, you have done parts of the assignment before, use the time it took previously as a guide to estimate how long each part of the assignment will take. • If NO, make your best guess. Make sure to record how long it takes you so you will know in the future. Planet flashcards

  14. Developing an Understanding of Time Assignment: Write a one-page paper about a famous scientist andcreate a poster board with visuals. Time to Complete: Two Weeks Week 1 Planet flashcards Week 2

  15. Developing an Understanding of Time Ability to Estimate Time What helps to develop an ability to estimate time? Use your knowledge of time and knowledge of the task to make a well-educated “guesstimate” of how long a task will take. Example: You plan to watch the Monday night football game at 8:30pm EST. You “guesstimate” that your homework will take 45 minutes to complete, so you start it at 7:15pm EST. After 45 minutes, you realize you have completed only half of your homework. As a result, you miss the first half of the football game!

  16. Developing an Understanding of Time Solutions for Developing an Ability to Estimate Time • Look closely at the assignment, and ask yourself, “Is this something that will be easy for me to complete, or will it be more challenging?” • Use this knowledge, combined with past experiences of similar assignments, to try to estimate the time it will take you to complete your assignment. • Check in with yourself as time passes. Do you need more time or less time? How accurate was your estimate? • Keep practicing!

  17. Developing an Understanding of Time • Try it out! • Scenario: Research Paper • It is November1stand your history teacher assigned a research paper on the major events leading up to the start of the Civil War. It’s due Thursday, November 30th. • The project will be 30% of your final grade. The requirements are: • 8‒10 pages in length. • Include at least 5 different sources. • .

  18. Developing an Understanding of Time Metacognitive Wrap-Up • Find an upcoming assignment. • What are the steps you will need to complete the assignment?

  19. Strategy Reflection Strategy Reflection Sheets

  20. Strategy Reflection Strategy Share • What strategy did you use? • How did you use it? • Was the strategy helpful? • If so, how did you know it was helpful?
