  2. Note Taking Options • Write notes on cards. • Make photocopies and mark desired information. • Download electronic/onlinematerials.

  3. Guidelines • Make three kinds of notes -- Direct Quotations, Summaries and Paraphrases, & Enumeration of Facts. • Label each note card with the subject, source, and page number. • Limit one idea per card. • Record full bibliographic information for each source on a separate card. • Specify your own ideas by marking the word “mine” on the note card.

Those in this study with preschool experience also chose more education, had better employment records, and avoided teenage pregnancy more often than those without preschool.

Lower rate of teenage pregnancy with preschool experience 3. Higher rate of education with preschool experience 4. Higher rate of employment with preschool experience

Example--Combination Role of preschool in preventing delinquency Hurley p.66 A recent study from the Perry Preschool program in Michigan suggests that disadvantaged children who have attended preschool are less likely to be arrested as adults or to become pregnant as teenagers than those without preschool and “more likely to have graduated from high school, have enrolled in post-secondary education programs, and be employed.”

  9. Avoiding Plagiarism Plagiarism is the unacknowledged use of someone else’s words, data, or ideas. Two Forms • Conscious Plagiarism • Inadvertent Plagiarism

  10. Conscious Plagiarism Conscious plagiarism is the deliberate misrepresentation of someone else’s material as one’s own. This form of plagiarism is punishable by an “F” in the course and such penalties as the Academic Honor Board may determine including possible expulsion. • Submitting an essay purchased from a term paper service • Copying another student’s work • Having someone else write your essay • Claiming copied material in the essay as your own

  11. Inadvertent Plagiarism Inadvertent Plagiarism often is due to a misunderstanding of what constitutes plagiarism by a student. Most often, this form of plagiarism is easily rectified through conferences with the teacher and by visiting the Writing Center. • Use of paraphrase without acknowledging the source in the belief that by recasting information one gains ownership of it • Careless omission of quotation marks and in-text references

  12. Ways to Avoid Plagiarism • Remember to include quotation marks around direct quotations during the note taking process • Paraphrase properly by rewriting the entire passage • Confer with your professor • Visit the Writing Studio
