  1. Origin: United States of America Murray Gell-Mann By: Josie Boltjes-Johnson

  2. Murray Gell-Mann • Born September 15th, 1929 in New York City. • Got his B.Sc. At Yale University in 1949. • In 1952, got his Ph.D. • Ph.D. was from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  Massachusetts Institute of Tech. Yale 

  3. Physics • Formulated the “quark model” of hadronic resonances. • Identified the SU(3) flavor symmetry of light quarks. • Created current algebra in 1960. • Responsible for see-saw theory of neutrino masses. Quark model

  4. Physics • Discovered the sigma model of pions. • Kept string theory going throughout the 1970’s. • With help of others they discovered, Quantum Chromodynamics. • That was in 1984.

  5. The Quark Model • Elementary particle and a fundamental constituent of matter. • Quarks combine to form composite particles called hadrons. • There are six types of quarks • -up • -down • -charm • -strange • -top • - bottom

  6. The Quark Model • Up and Down has lowest masses. • Charm, strange, top, and bottom only produced in.. • High energy collisions. • (Involving cosmic rays and particle accelerators.)

  7. The Quark Model • Quarks have carious intrinsic properties. -Electric charge -Color charge -Spin -Mass

  8. The Quark Model • Classified as the Eightfold Way. • Gell-Mann and George Zweig proposed it in 1964. • It wasn’t until 1977 it was official. • Named it after the sound made by ducks.

  9. Murray Gell-Mann • Married in 1992, to Marcia Southwick. • After she died he married again to J.Margaret Dow. • Had 3 children. • 1 girl and 2 boys.
