  6. Form of Writing Courtesy Letters are friendly letters that you write to thank someone for something they do for you. It may also be an invitation you send inviting someone to a party. Finally, a courtesy letter may also be an apology that you write to someone. Caycedo, April and Futch Jennifer

  7. Stage of Writing The prewriting stage is the first stage in the writing process. It is the most important stage in the development of a good letter. In this stage, you must determine three things.. Caycedo, April and Futch Jennifer

  8. Stage of Writing Continued: You must determine who you are writing to, what you are thanking them for, and how you would like to close the letter. You will complete a graphic organizer that will help you make sure you have all of the parts needed for a courtesy letter. Caycedo, April and Futch Jennifer

  11. Show and Explain Model Using the thank you letters to Bill and Noriko, show examples of thank you letters that students have written. These letters were written to the same people, but were all different. These are great examples of a thank you letter. By presenting the letters to students the teacher is showing how a thank you letter can be written. Caycedo, April and Futch Jennifer

  12. Show and Explain Model This would allow students to see the format of who they are writing the letter, why they are writing the letter, what they are thanking the person for and a closure to the letter. Caycedo, April and Futch Jennifer

  13. Practice Activity After teaching students how to write a courtesy letter, or thank you letter, I would give them the graphic organizer to begin the prewriting activity. During this activity I would explain the parts of the graphic organizer clearly to the students. After explaining the parts we would then walk through each part of the graphic organizer and allow students to fill in their graphic organizer with teacher assistance.   14. Assessment Activity Since students will be writing a thank you letter to our grade mother for baking cookies, I would give students a blank graphic organizer which they will complete so that they may complete a thank you letter. Caycedo, April and Futch Jennifer

  19. Stage of Writing Drafting is the second stage of the writing process. During this stage, you will use the graphic organizer that you created during the prewriting stage to write a rough draft of your courtesy letter. All you have to do during this stage is put your thoughts on paper. Caycedo, April and Futch Jennifer

  20. Stage of Writing Continued . All you need to do is translate your thoughts from your graphic organizer into sentences for your rough draft. You need to date the letter, greet the reader, complete the letter and close your letter. Caycedo, April and Futch Jennifer

I was surprised to find out that the birthday of Lisa (I want to take good care of her) on February 2 is the same as mine. I really want to be good friends with America and other countries. Also, I want to search for the Japanese Friendship Doll named Miss Kanagawa. When I saw the pictures of terror, I thought, "This is too terrible." I will be friends and not make war.   23. Show and Explain Model In this instance, the internet site can be used to show children how to draft a letter. I will be able to show students how each letter contains certain parts. Each letter begins with an introduction, includes a body, and ends with a distinct conclusion. Students will be able to see in the letters how to support the main idea with details. They will also be able to see how important an introduction and conclusion are to a courtesy letter. Caycedo, April and Futch Jennifer

  24. Practice Activity The students will choose who they will write the courtesy letter to as well as decide as a group what they will be thanking the recipient for. The students will then dictate a courtesy letter while I transcribe, word for word, what the students have said. Caycedo, April and Futch Jennifer

  25. Practice Activity Continued Before we focus on the body of the letter, I will have the students describe for me how the letter should be set up. Once we have the appropriate format, the class will work together to practice writing a courtesy letter. Caycedo, April and Futch Jennifer

  26. Assessment Activity Students will use the graphic organizer they created during the prewriting stage to compose a courtesy letter to the grade mothers for providing such delicious cookies for the classroom. They will be expected to use the appropriate format, identify who they are thanking, what they are thanking them for, use supporting details, and create an appropriate concluding statement and ending.
