  1. Elements of Geometry Section 9.1

  2. Learning Targets I can name basic geometric figures. I can recognize intersecting lines, parallel lines, and skew lines.

  3. Examples Name four points. Name four different segments. Write five other names for WT. Name five different rays.

  4. Terms Two lines intersect if they have exactly one point in common. Two lines that lie in the same plane and do not intersect are parallel. You use the symbol || to indicate "is parallel to." Segments and rays are parallel if they lie in parallel lines.

  5. Terms Perpendicular lines (p. 492) Perpendicular lines are lines that intersect to form right angles.

  6. Terms Skew lines are lines that do not lie in the same plane. They are not parallel and they do not intersect. Skew segments must be parts of skew lines.

  7. Terms An angle is a figure formed by two rays with a common endpoint. The vertex is the common endpoint of the two rays that meet to form an angle. A B C

  8. Terms The rays are the sides of the angle. Aprotractor is a circular or semicircular tool for measuring an angle or a circle. A degree usually denoted by ° (the degree symbol), is a measurement of planeangle.
