  4. Treating the Symptom –“Buy One, Give One” • Fulfill immediate, basic need • Donations-based programs • E.g. TOMS • Help preventing soil-transmitted diseases • Provide recipients access to schools

Treating the Cause –“Buy One, Hire One” • Gets to the root cause of the problem – poverty • Safeguards against the unintended negative by-product of foreign aid, i.e. A culture of Western dependency • E.g. VisionSpring • Focus on job creation • Provide trainings to people in developing countries • To provide eye exams and sell affordable glasses to their community
