  1. Velocity Field Modelling for Pollutant Plume Using 3-D Adaptive Finite Element Method University Institute of Intelligent Systems and Numerical Applications in Engineering G. Montero, R. Montenegro, J.M. Escobar, E. Rodríguez and J.M. González-Yuste ICCS’2004 - International Conference on Computer Science - Kraków, Poland, June 6-9, 2004 UNIVERSITY OF LAS PALMAS DE GRAN CANARIA Partially supported by MCYT of Spanish Government and FEDER of European Union. Grant contract: REN2001-0925-C03-02/CLI http://www-lacan.upc.es/projects/REN2001_0925_C03/ Automatic strategies for adaptive 3-D mesh generation over complex terrain including chimneys: - Refinement/derefinement algorithm in 2-D to define an adaptive node distribution over the terrain surface. - Determination of the set of points in the domain using a vertical spacing function. - Delaunay triangulation in an auxiliary parallelepiped. Simultaneous untangling and smoothing of the mesh. - Local mesh refinement based on the 8-subtetrahedron subdivision to improve numerical solution. 3-D mass consistent model for wind field adjustment including effects of chimney emissions: - Determination of the observed wind using horizontal interpolation and vertical extrapolation of station measures. - Vertical velocity correction of the observed wind along the trajectories of pollutant plumes arising from chimneys. - Wind field adjustment to the observed wind by solving a least-square problem and using parameter estimation. Domain in the South of La Palma Island Discretization of the Domain Chimney Area to be meshed 6 Km 31.2 Km 45.6 Km Chimney Zoom including the chimney Mesh detail near the chimney Wind field around the chimney Vertical velocity correction along the plume trajectory by using a Gaussian Plume Model Predominant buoyancy rise Predominant momentum rise
