  1. November 5, 2013 • Turn in 5.3 and 5.5 Reinforcement. • Leave out vocab & PN to be stamped. • Fill out the “Know” and “Want to Know” sections of your KWL chart.

  2. Stem Cells • We have over 200 types of cells in our bodies that all have specialized jobs. • ..But we start out as a single-celled, fertilized egg. • How do we go from one cell to hundreds of types of cells?

  3. Stem Cells • Stem cells are cells that have the unique ability to develop into a variety of specialized cells. • Stem cells develop into specialized cells through a process called cell differentiation.

  4. Stem Cells • Stem cells will differentiate depending on: • The environment they’re in, and • Their location. • Outer = Exoderm • Middle = Mesoderm • Inner = Endoderm

  5. Stem Cell Classification • Stem cells can be classified in 3 ways:

  6. Stem Cell Classification • Stem cells can also be classified by their origin: • Somatic stem cells are found in developed humans (children and adults) and in umbilical cord blood. • Embryonic stem cells are taken from a cluster of undifferentiated cells in a 3-to-5-day-old blastocyst.

  7. Stem Cell Classification • Blastocysts are only used to create embryonic stem cells when donated by patients undergoing in-vitro fertilization treatments.

  8. Stem Cell Research • Currently used to treat a variety of diseases, including leukemia and lymphoma. • Incredibly hard to do! • Stem cells want to differentiate & will do so spontaneously.

  9. Activity 14 • Read the information together. • Complete the activity as a pair. • Brainstorm answers to questions #1-4 on your whiteboards. • Explain answers to your partner orally. • “I don’t know” is not an acceptable answer!

  10. Activity 15 • Add any additional “Want to Know” information to your KWL chart. • Brainstorm answers to questions #1-2 on your whiteboards. • Explain answers to your partner orally. • “I don’t know” is STILL not an acceptable answer! • Complete the “Learned” section of your KWL.
