  2. Subcontinent - a large landmass that is smaller than a continent

  3. monsoon – seasonal wind, especially in the Indian Ocean and southern Asia

  4. emerge – to come into being or become known

  6. Sanskrit – the first written language of India

  7. caste – an Indian social class whose members are restricted in the jobs they may take and in their association with members of other castes

  8. promote – to encourage the doing of something

  9. stupa – a Buddhist shrine, usually dome shaped

  10. pilgrim – a person who travels to holy sites

  11. contribute – to give or donate something

  12. structure – a building or other built object

  13. warlord – a military commander exercising civil power by force, usually in a limited area

  14. ancestor – a person that someone is descended from

  15. pictograph – a symbol in a writing system based on pictures

  16. ideograph – a symbol in a writing system that represents a thing or an idea

  17. hereditary – having title or possession by reason of birth

  18. philosophy – the study of the basic ideas about society, education, and right and wrong

  19. filial piety – the responsibility children have to respect, obey, and care for their parents

  20. censor – an official who watches others for correct behavior

  21. civil service – the administrative service of a government

  22. generation – a group of individuals born and living at the same time
