  3. Course Description • The major role of information technology in business is to: • Provide solutions to business problems • Provide opportunities for firms by enabling • Increased productivity • Quality improvement • Business process re-engineering • Electronic commerce

Course Objectives BUS 391 will focus on: Heads On • The role of information and IS in organizations • Strategic opportunities with IS • Components of an IT infrastructure • Role of IS/IT in supporting decision making - technologies • Role of IS/IT in supporting knowledge management - technologies • Role of IS/IT in defining emerging business models - technologies Hands On Develop business applications using Access, Excel, and FrontPage

Expectations My Role: To facilitate learning • Lectures • In-class activities • Homework • Exams • Projects • Available through phone, email, office hours, etc. Your Role: Take responsibility for your own learning • Attend class: read text, ask questions, participate in your learning • Do ALL homework assigned • Think about issues, ask questions, contribute to the learning experience • Be prepared for exams, projects, etc.

  7. Class “Rules” • No using computers for any purpose during class time other than class activities • You will be docked if you miss and/or are late for more than 3 classes • Assignments 1 day late will be docked 10% points – anything submitted more than 1 day late receives a grade of zero. • There will be an official break period for the class. Do not get up and walk in and out of the room unless you have an emergency. • No email read after 8:00 p.m. or during week ends – unless there is an emergency.
