Ergogenic Aids and Sports Performance Ergogenic aids are defined as any practice that improves physical performance Ergogenic Aids are not always illegal but there are many ‘legal’ drugs that have been made illegal in sport Drug abuse in sport for the purpose of enhancing performance is referred to as ‘doping’

  3. Drugs Classifications-Vitamins and food supplements-Anti-inflammatory drugs for sporting injuries-Pain relieving drugs-Drugs for asthma and nasal congestion-Drugs for reducing body weight

  4. Drug Classifications (continued) -Anabolic Steroids and Human Growth Hormone (HGH) -Stimulants -Sedatives and Tranquilizers -Diuretics

Commonly Used Drugs • Anabolics (increased muscle growth) • Beta-blockers (relax nerves and reduce tremor) • Blood doping and EPO (increased red blood cells and therefore oxygen delivery) • Diuretics (increased urination and therefore weight loss and masking of illegal drugs) • Narcotics (increased pain threshold) • Stimulants (increased alertness and competitiveness)
