  1. 1.4 Distributive Property Objective: Review the use of the Distributive Property to simplify expressions CFU 3102.1.9; SPI 3102.1.13 ; CFU 3102.2.1 Identify and use properties of the real numbers (including commutative, associative, distributive, inverse, identity element, closure, reflexive, symmetric, transitive, operation; Recognize and use like terms to simplify expressions.;.

  2. Glossary TermsDefine and place in your glossary. • Variable • Algebraic Expression • Factors • Products • Evaluate • Reciprocal • Function • Origin • Solution Set • Coefficient • Ordered Pair • Power • Base • Exponent • Domain • Range Remember you have 5 minutes to get started.

  3. Key Notes for Today copy into your notebook • For any numbers a, b and c a(b + c) = ab + ac • Also a(b-c) = ab – ac (b + c)a = ba + ca And (b – c)a= ba – ca • Like Terms • Terms with same variable and same exponents.

  4. Suppose….. • You work in a video store. In the morning you have 8 customers. Each one buys a new game and a bargain game. Calculate your total sales for the morning. One Calculation 8 (14.95) + 8(34.95) = $119.60 + $279.60 = $399.20 Another Calculation 8 (14.95 + 34.95) = 8 (49.90) = $399.20

  5. Distributive Property • For any numbers a, b and c a(b + c) = ab + ac 2(4 + 5) = 2*4 + 2*5 = 8 + 10 = 18 Also a(b-c) = ab – ac (b + c)a = ba + ca And (b – c)a= ba - ca

  6. Distributive Property • For any numbers a, b and c a(b + c) = ab + ac 8(3x + 2) = (2y – 3) 4 =

  7. LIKE TERMS • Terms with same variable and same exponents. • YOU CAN ONLY ADD AND SUBTRACT LIKE TERMS 2x + 3y = 2x + 3y 4q2 + 8q = 4q2 + 8q

  8. LIKE TERMS • Terms with same variable and same exponents. • YOU CAN ONLY ADD AND SUBTRACT LIKE TERMS 3x + 5x = 8x 3m2 + 8m2 = 11m2 Always write the COEFFICIENT (Letter) First 2n not n2

  9. Assignment • Page 27, 14 – 46 Even • Copy table “Properties of Numbers” on page 26 into your notes
