Biography • born in Rome in 1593 • made her first well known piece of work at the age of 17: Susana and the Elders • not accepted into an art academy because she’s a girl • she was raped by her father’s colleague • arranged marriage to PierantonioStiattesi • moved to Florence: accepted into a painters academy • 1621 she moved back to Rome • moved to Naples in 1630: would end up painting here for the remainder of her life • follower of Caravaggio • known for her images of strong and suffering women • died in 1653
