Introductory Paragraphs • Remember: • Introductory paragraphs should include the following: 1.Attention Grabber and Thesis Statements Paragraph One: Attention Grabber • Types of Attention Grabbers: • Question that presents what you will talk about • Quote: that tackles the main idea of your essay • Riddle/Puzzle: that gives way to your essay • General Statement: that gives an idea about your topic

  3. Your attention grabber should introduce the general idea of your topic • Example 1: Do you think that characters that are presented in movies resemble real human beings? • The above attention grabber is a question that talks about movie characters in general.

  4. Example 2“Movie characters usually represent different human characters. They give examples to humans’ appearance, thoughts and feelings, and actions. They also reflect humans’ characters by presenting their thoughts and what others think about him.” • The above is a general statement that introduce movie characters in general.

  5. Paragraph Two:Thesis Statement2.Thesis statement: is a statement/sentence that states the main idea of your whole essayIt can come at the beginning or the end of the introductory paragraph

Paragraph Two:When you get to write your second paragraph and introduce thesis statements, start explaining what you stated in your attention grabber:Example:“When writers choose characters, they try to present them through showing how they look ,act, think, or say. They also like to show what others think about them.I really liked how the writer showed Raymond’s character in “Rain Man.”By applying all the five elements of characterization, you can actually get to know a lot about autistic people and how they are!(The underlined part is the thesis statement/I started by talking generally and then discussed the character I will analyze)

  7. NB: Always start by generally discussing the topic of your essay and addressing your audience. Afterwards, introduce your thesis statement which specifically addresses the topic of your essay.

Body Paragraphs • Your body paragraphs should include the following: • 1.Topic Sentence • A topic sentence should make the reader know what your paragraph will be about • Example: “Raymond’s appearance reflect the appearance of an autistic person.” • Since my essay is about Raymond, I mentioned that I will describe his appearance. • When the reader reads such a sentence, he/she will know what my paragraph is about

  9. Supporting Sentences • Your supporting sentences should include the following: • 1.Example for the element of characterization • 2.Character trait for each element • Example: • Mary had scars all over her body • Character trait: she was tolerant/Her abuse made her stronger

  10. Important • Choose character traits from your positive and negative personality adjectives sheet • Check your copybook for rubrics

  11. Closure:Your introduction should include TWO paragraphs:1.A paragraph that includes an attention grabber 2.A second paragraph that includes the thesis statementAlways talk about your topic generally, and then mention your specific topic ,as your thesis statement3.Your body paragraphs should include TS. And SS with examples and character traits
