Research Profile Intelligent systems, intelligent building, system identification, adaptive control. Photonics sensors, photonic sensor networks, optical fibre communications. Stability analysis & assessment, intelligent methods in power systems, real-time digital power system simulation, deregulation & restructuring,. Power conversion, railway engineering, application of AI in power electronics, machine design, motion control, traction system, traffic control. Assets Management & Conditional Monitoring Power System Stability, Control and Operation Power Industry Deregulation & Market Analysis Solve real-life engineering problems of a multidisciplinary nature Cultivate strategic partnerships with industry in product development (Short-term strategy - ~3-5 yr) Establish new research areas in electrical engineering. For example, intelligent photonics monitoring networks for railway systems (Long-term strategy - ~5-10 yr) Establish international research centre of excellent in electrical engineering in assets management & condition monitoring of electrical systems, etc.

  14. World’s First Smart Railway Sensor Network • Axle counter • Train identification • Speed of trains • Condition of train motors • Passenger estimation • Derailment prevention PolyU installed over 100’s optical sensors in railway tracks of KCRC and trains of KCRC & MTR.

  15. GuangzhouTV & Sightseeing TowerWorld’s Tallest, 610-m (2009) • PolyU to design and install a Structural Health Monitoring System (~ HK$ 8 M) • Include a photonic sensor network with 120 FBG sensors Optical sensing network with 120 FBG sensors to measure temperature and dynamic strain (design and install by PolyU).

  16. ITF Project on Online Transformer Condition Monitoring by use of Fiber Optic Gas Sensors • CLP power sponsor • Project sum $1 Million • One year duration

  17. PolyU-KCRC Smart Railway Research Laboratory • Location: CD ground floor • $15 Million equipment • Train Cab with bogie • Smart signaling system

  18. Electric Vehicle + MyCarTM • 2 company sponsors • $4 Million project • Capability to develop EV from 2kW to 20kW • New technology in steering, braking and power conversion. • Has designed: • MyCarTM 2kW, 6kW -  SmartTM 8kW • Golf cart 3kW, 4kW

  20. Academic Collaborations with Other Universities (Undergraduate) • Student exchanges (for one semester or even a year) • Universities around the world • (Australia, Canada, UK, US, Singapore, Taiwan) • Cultural exploration • Appreciation of teaching and style • Personalities development

  21. Academic Collaborations with Other Universities (Postgraduate) • Joint-supervision of research students • (e.g. Zhijiang University) • Overseas research students attachment • This allows students to attach to highly reputed overseas universities

  22. Academic Collaborations with Other Universities • Essential for research … bouncing ideas off peers • Mutual benefit and complementary expertise/equipment • setup • No boundary on physical locations • China, Australia, UK, US, Canada, Japan, • Singapore … and list just goes on

  23. Areas of Collaboration • Power system engineering • Fibre optics technologies • Applications of power electronics devices • Railway engineering, condition monitoring and • asset management • Energy management • and many more ……

  24. Possible Outcomes of Collaboration • More than just publications! • Theories and technologies development  patents • Successful practical applications  commercial products • Involvement of industries

  25. Development of A Comprehensive Web-Based Learning System: E-3Learning • Overview: • Build on Internet site at HKPolyU • New Educational Technologies in the concept of ‘mobile e-learning’ • Joint efforts of Chinese University of HK, City University of HK and HKPolyU • 3.5 million HKD by UGC

  26. E-3Learning: Development of A Comprehensive Web-Based Learning System (Cont 1) • E-3Learn-Main • Objectives • Components • Enrich – section describes sites to help teaching and learning • Project – sites containing project information • Project with evaluation • Example – provided in websites to encourage students interaction with contents, teachers and peers • Extend – describes what have been learned in the E-3learning project and the resources implications • Evaluate – Evaluation system which allows teachers to cooperate in the whole evaluation process • Disseminate - provides links on papers on the project

  27. E-3Learning: Development of A Comprehensive Web-Based Learning System (Cont 2) • Impact • Staff, institutions, and Hong Kong students benefited from a variety of educationally-sound e-learning activities. • Mobile e-learning activities were developed and investigated, giving Hong Kong students leading-edge educational experiences. • The university community benefited from the investigation of mobile e-learning technologies. • Global impact was enabled since Hong Kong is generally recognized as a leader in the use of mobile telephone technology. • Furthermore, each participating university benefited from the shared resources and skills sets provided by this project.

  28. E-3Learning: Development of A Coprehensive Web-Based Learning System (Cont 3) 1) PolyU's position paper on eLearning which highlights that pedagogy takes precedence over technology etc: http://eldss.edc.polyu.edu.hk/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=39&Itemid=67 2) Project demo page describes and provides links to some more recent projects at PolyU http://eldss.edc.polyu.edu.hk/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=71&Itemid=127 3) The Government funded e3Learning Projects built over for PolyU Staff: http://e3learning.edc.polyu.edu.hk/ 4) Working examples arranged according to useful conceptual framework: http://e3learning.edc.polyu.edu.hk/examples.htm 5) Papers produced out the projects: http://e3learning.edc.polyu.edu.hk/ResourcesOverview.htm
