  2. What is Transport for London (TfL) ? • Transport for London’s (TfL) role is to implement the Mayor’s Transport Strategy and manage the transport services for which the Mayor has responsibility

  4. Mayor of London The Mayor has put transport at the top of his agenda. His manifesto states “The single most important priority for the Mayor and Greater London Authority will be to solve the crisis of London's transport system.”

  8. Which are our Streets ?

  9. TLRN • 11 million car / motorcycle journeys every day in London • 5.5 million bus trips every day • 40-50 buses per hour on some roads • 13,500 km road network • TfL has identified a total of 2,050 km of roads that carry 2/3 London’s traffic • 580 km red routes managed by TfL - carry 1/3 traffic • Additional “strategic” roads proposed under TMA

  10. Why is London unique? • Capital city and economic centre of UK • 26,000,000 trips per day • 80% trips by road • Road network already operates at capacity

Transport for London Road Network • 580 km of a National network of 36,700 km • Serves everyone that lives in and around London • 9m people out of a National population of 57m • So…………………………………… • 16% of the population relying on 0.16% of the road network • This makes the TLRN 100 times more important than the average road!

Where are we with modelling and planning? • Roads (carriageways and footways) • Model developed and constantly refined to reflect true condition • 15-20 years forward planning • Link between capital investment and revenue spend established • Lighting condition • Model developed • Bridges • Phase I complete - theoretical model • Phase II - need to work with BCI work

Parapet containment risk • TfL own many pre BE5 structures • As impact load is directly proportional to the mass of the vehicle but the square of the impact speed - urban risk management can be considered differently from trunk road risk management • TfL developed a process based on engineering and probabilistic analysis using traffic statistics • Can be used e.g for assessment of risks associated with weak verges under footways where assessed to fail AWL

  19. Thames bridge strikes • Battersea bridge repairs – strike on average 1 in 10 years • Westminster bridge – two minor strikes in 5 years • Our stakeholders want to know what we are doing about ensuring it doesn’t happen again

  20. Anything else? • TfL are setting up a Central Structures team (currently under recruitment) to take forward Structures asset management and policy • Anyone concerned about risks of avian flu attributable to pigeons roosting under structures?
