  1. Education in Mexico

  2. Introduction Education in Mexico is greatly segregated by social class. Wealthy families send their children to private schools, while poorer children attend government schools. These circumstances create a large social gap between the citizens.

  3. Literacy rate In 2004 the literacy rate was 97% for under the age of 14, 91% for people over 15. Mexico is ranked at the 24th place in the world rank according to UNESCO.

  4. Education system • The number of Mexican students went from 3 million to 32 million since 1950 • Average year of schooling of adults is 7.2. • Education is compulsory till 10 years. • Around 45% of Mexicans finish secondary school • Mexicans read less than 3 books a year on average. • Many children traditionally choose work over school.

  5. Enrollment rates • Enrollment rates: • Total 26.6 million • Primary 18.5 million • Secondary 5.8 million • Post-secondary 2.3 million

  6. How does literacy rate affect standard of living? • The literacy rate of an area, state, or country affects the standard of living by raising it. Because now there are more advanced jobs that require a higher literacy rate especially high-paying jobs. Countries should make sure that the jobs the governments are offering should be a mixture of both. By that way the country will have a balanced society which will participate in increasing the countries GDP.

  7. What did Mexico to improve the literacy rate ? Mexico is now working really hard to improve the literacy rates and have a balanced society. Government spending on education now amounts to 25 centavos of every peso spent by the government. This money is used to build new primary schools and technical schools. The money also helped to distribute free textbooks to 90% of the public schools in Mexico. Nine out of ten children between the ages of six and fourteen are enrolled in primary school, 770,000 more than were enrolled. These steady trends of improvement are a good sign that the educational future of children in Mexico is improving.
