  2. Background Information • Known as Nicholas AlexandrovichRomanov • Born into Romanov Dynasty • Ascended the throne after his fathers death in 1894 • Had a wife and five children -married a German Princess Alix of Hesse (a royal connection)

  3. Nicholas II Reign • Crowned Tsar in 1896 • Received military information • Devoted to his country • 2 wars occurred -heavy defeat from Japan, 400,00o men killed -WWI, Russia entered on allied side • Abdicated the thrown in 1917

  4. Ideology • His role as autocrat was derived his authorityfrom god -strong believer • Believed that god had appointed the Tsar to rule over Russia. • Thought he was responsible only to god for his actions. • It was his sacred duty to preserve his absolute power in tact.

  5. Did he change his ideology? In the beginning he was with the people, for the people. He thought it was his duty to help. Now after a war with Germany he ignored the people, and didn’t lead any discussions.

Industrial Growth with Nicholas II • Raised taxes/tarrifs and interest rates • There was light industry • Agriculture was ignored • Invested in railways and building new trains -Siberian Railway -construction began in 1891 -Nicholas II blessed it -Created massive change in trading and exporting • The Gold Standard -raised large amount of capitol ($$) -currency was valued according to gold amount

Family/Relations to other Royal families • He was the Russian crowned prince • Various connections between the Windsors and the Russian imperial Royal family, the Romanovs • He proposed to princess Alix -Romanovs and Windsors • Alix and Nicholas II were executed with the rest of their family by the Bolsheviks
