The Renaissance: Cultural Movement • 14th – 17th centuries in Europe • Began in Florence • Renaissance means “rebirth” (1855) • Geometric and human perfection, balance, moderation • Embrace of classical ideals • Shift from studying Latin works to Greek works (Homer, Demosthenes, Thucydides, Plato, etc.)

  3. Causes of Renaissance • Fall of Constantinople in 1453 – migration of Greek scholars to the west • Re-introduction of ancient texts preserved by Irish monasteries • Literature - metal movable type, vernacular • Painting - linear perspective • Focus on intellectual pursuits

  4. Political Landscape • Lots of independent kingdoms and duchies in Italy • City-states • The Papal States – unbroken line of bishops since St. Peter • Merchant states are strong

The Medici Family • Banking family that ruled Florence, capital of Tuscany • Da Vinci, Botticelli, Michelangelo were all Tuscan • Cosimo de Medici • Lorenzo the Magnificent “Il Magnifico” – main patron of artists • Catherine de Medici • The Popes – Leo X, Clement VII, Lius IV, Leo XI • Savanarola – monk who kicked out the Medicis, people turned against him
