  1. HELPING YOUR SON TO DEVELOP THE RIGHT STUDY HABITS AND SKILLS.

  2. PREAMBLE • The letter you received read: “In this session we shall share a few ideas on how you can help your son acquire the right study habits and skills that will help them do well in the KCSE examinations and also to prepare him for a rigorous academic life in sec. sch.

  3. IMPORTANT FACTS • Std 7 tends to be a challenging class. • Introduction of the mid-cats increases the frequency of exams. • Boys take time to adjust to this. • They are facing developmental changes associated with adolescence.

  4. IMPORTANT FACTS • The marks tend to be lower than previous classes because of the increased academic pressure and lack of requisite adjustment by the boys. This happens yearly. • Std 7 is a pre-candidate class, hence preparation for KCPE has started.

  5. WHAT ARE WE TRYING TO ACHIEVE? • We are trying to inculcate good study habits in the boys that will help them succeed in secondary school and in university. • We are preparing them to do well in KCPE and to secure a good secondary school.

  6. Characteristics of Std 7 2014 • Group mentality. • Not diligent where class/homework is concerned. • There is copying of homework. • Careless with personal items: they lose things, break others, etc. • Use of free time could improve.

  7. WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN PLANNING. • Short –term goals (for weekdays and some weekends). • Long-term goals (for April, August and December holidays).

  8. SHORT–TERM GOALS • To attend classes and LISTEN. • To do class work well. • To do homework well. • To prepare well for the mid-CATs and CATs. • To have a study timetable that helps me study daily. (2 hours)

  9. LONG–TERM GOALS • Revisiting topics covered in earlier years. {Science study that revealed 50% of questions came from Std 5 and 6 material} • Exam covers Std 4-8 in all subjects. • Learning to read across classes. • Enhancing their weaker subjects (success lies in these).

  10. Doing revision papers (guidance provided by subject teachers). • They have to do a thorough revision of the entire syllabus. • Examples: • Science: Topic 1: The human body (4-Teeth; 5-Digestive system; 6-Reproductive; 7-Circulatory; 8-Reproductive system & STDs)

  11. Example: Social Studies: Topic 1: The Physical Environment (4-Nairobi County; 5-Kenya; 6-Eastern Africa; 7-Africa; 8-Kenya & the rest of the world.) • Example: English & Kiswahili: The importance of Composition and Insha writing. • Kiswahili is the swing factor…

  12. They must work very closely with the teachers to determine the best way to revise the various subjects and how to order their topics. • Priority should be given to weak subjects, without losing ground on the strong subjects.

  13. SUGGESTIONS ON HOW TO PLAN • Draw a timetable (must be written). • {3wks ago 50% had no timetable. On Mon, 25% still didn’t have one} • Weekday timetable (2 hours daily). • Weekend timetable (4 to 6 hours over the weekend). • Holiday timetable (4-6 hours daily)

  14. Prioritize the subjects in terms of difficulty and apportion time appropriately. • Review progress, e.g. after each set of exams (mid-CAT or CAT). • Think of supplementary material or help (tuition) that they may need (always consult with the subject teacher).

  15. WORK WITH A GOAL • Set realistic targets and plan towards achieving them: • How many hours should I study? • During weekdays? During weekends? During holidays? • What marks am I working towards? • What subjects will boost me?

  16. Which subjects may undermine me and why? • What help do I need: books, tuition, alarm, desk? • What am I planning to give up this year? • How do I plan to balance between sports and academics? Lunch time soccer…

  17. RELAXATION AND SOCIAL LIFE • Std 7 & 8 tend to be very stressful and hence the need for ample rest: • Enough sleep (not less than 7 hours). • Physical activities (sports). • Vary activities: study, reading novels, watching a movie, etc.

  18. THINGS TO AVOID • TV : none during the week. • Movies & series: none during the week. Decide about weekend. • Mobile phones: Do they need them? Keep them from Sunday evening to Friday night. (Facebook) • Play station and Computer games. • Wi-Fi – Needs to be managed.

  19. Frequent outings (Sat. & Sun.) • Company of older or younger people without the same academic pressures. • Business in or out school. • Excess cash (How much money does your son have?) • Suspicious “neighbourhood study groups”.

  20. HOW PARENTS CAN HELP. • Everything we have discussed requires the guidance of the parents. {A candidate house…} • Show genuine interest in his studies. • Be vigilant in the supervision of homework, Saturdays and holidays.

  21. {Those who come to school to study on Saturday but waste time walking to the malls} • Be quick to recognize and praise effort and improvement. • Give positive criticism & offer hope (even after collecting the report form you now have in your hands). • Talk about exams in an encouraging manner.

  22. Avoid comparisons of siblings. • Correct using facts and not opinions {O: You are lazy. F: You did not study this morning} • Occasionally arrange activities that will help him relax: lunch, visits he enjoys, a movie, etc.
