  5. Welcome Speech Abu Dhabi Sustainability Group founders, members, esteemed partners, Ladies and Gentlemen, Welcome to the third ADSG Forum Quarterly Meeting for 2013. The ADSG is built on a foundation of partnership, collaboration and transparency with the overarching objective of promoting sustainability practices and capability for the benefit of all members for a more sustainable future in Abu Dhabi.

Continued So I am delighted to see you all here today, particularly today we mark a major milestone in implementing the new management model, in the shape of the election for Facilitation and Coordination Committee, and with your input and direction we will start to develop and build the Group's strategy and plans for the coming years.

  7. Continued We shared a survey with you some days ago, so I would like to thank those of you who took the time to respond. Your engagement is critical for our work, collectively, to succeed. Today, we will start with our strategy development process, through a knowledge sharing session that will be followed by a workshop. I would ask you to please join in and express your views and concerns regarding the sustainability issues the ADSG should tackle in the coming months and years.

  8. Continued Sustainability is increasing in importance in the UAE, which brings with it a focus on policy-making and potential regulation. This only means that the work we develop and achieve collectively through the ADSG becomes more significant, as the ADSG brings together organisations to co-operate on committing to values and practices which promote sustainability and aim to deliver a better future for today, tomorrow and the generations that follow. 

  9. Continued Let us together in 2013, a year which marked the fifth anniversary of the ADSG, take the opportunity to revitalise our efforts and make full use of the opportunities from this valuable partnership.

Continued Today, as you know we will be holding Facilitation & Coordination Committee (FCC) election, I would like to wish each ADSG FCC nominee the best of luck today, and beyond today as the new Committee takes shape and starts to lead sustainability on your behalf and for Abu Dhabi. This is both an honour and a responsibility - I thank you on behalf of the Group for rising to this challenge!

  14. ADSG benchmark • We looked at a sample of similar, voluntary membership groups with a focus on sustainability or corporate responsibility. • Benchmarks included: CERES (US), BITC (UK), Turkish Climate Platform, Dubai Chamber CRB, Climate Change Business Forum (Hong Kong), EPC (Brazil).

Survey Results - Disclaimer • 20 members completed the survey in full* • Due to sample size and potential for varying definitions, results should be seen as issues for further discussion, not complete representations of member opinions • There are no measures in place to assure that opinions expressed in the survey fully reflect the member entities view rather than the member representative’s views. *At point of inclusion

Survey Results - Overall • Some inconsistencies are apparent in the perception of the role of the ADSG, the Government and members • There is an emerging picture of what members want the ADSG to do for them • Some results point to structural issues in how members are managing sustainability • Issues that are important to members are not well aligned with the current ADSG focus • Members are somewhat ambiguous about the ADSG’s performance • There are no fundamental barriers to sustainability and members report high interest

  19. Survey Results The top 2 challenges: Regulations and Talent/Emiratisation – this is consistent with other findings that Emiratisation is a major issue.

  20. Survey Results Almost all answered that sustainability was important or very important. However, less than half had a dedicated manager and 40% had no corporate or staff KPI’s

  21. Survey Results Similarly, 18 out of 20 have or are developing a sustainability strategy – how does this fit with the lack of coverage with KPI’s?

Survey Results 70% of the group thinks that the Government/Executive Council should take the lead on sustainability with 25% saying the same for the ADSG – however, regulation/compliance was only 5th out of 8 in terms of a motivator for sustainability, not even one member claimed that ‘lack of government support’ was a barrier to sustainability and in suggesting how the ADSG could be more effective, advocating with Government only came in 5th out of 9. There is an apparent mismatch with how the group thinks of the role of Government, the role of the ADSG and their own drivers of change.

  23. Survey Results Workplace issues…Governance, Emiratisation and HSE were the top three sustainability issues for members. In general, environmental issues were of medium importance at best, sustainability reporting scored low along with community issues like charity and volunteering. This feedback raises questions about the focus of the ADSG and also the materiality of members’ focus. Surprisingly, Labour rights and standards scored 0, the lowest possible with no member listing it as a priority.

  25. Survey Results Community links were cited as the number 1 motivator when it comes to Sustainability. Community relations were deemed to be the 2nd most impacted issue by sustainability. However, community issues in general scored very low in terms of importance to members. This seems somewhat inconsistent.

  26. Survey Results The biggest barriers to sustainability for members were deemed to be staff engagement, time, resources and other priorities. These are very traditional business pressures and in general, there seems to be no fundamental barrier to members progressing sustainability. Once again, not a single member cited a lack of Government support as a barrier.

  27. Survey Results The ADSG was deemed effective at achieving it’s mission. However, the cluster of choices seems overly ‘polite’ and contrast to some degree with members’ assessment of ADSG delivery of services.

  28. Survey Results Members’ top 3 choices for a more effective ADSG were: Develop a roadmap, Organise collaborations/demonstrations and expand training and capacity building. Advocacy and Develop a rating system were also relatively popular. Investing in research/thought leadership was not popular. This indicates that the members already have expectations for the role of the ADSG.

  29. Survey Results Although members want the ADSG to organise collaborations, only 6 (4th of 6 choices) members answered that they were willing to provide resources to collaborate with other members in areas such as research.

  35. Election Process • Nominated candidates wishing to address the FQM have three minutes each to canvass voters during the FQM. • Following on from this, the voting will take place under the supervision of Mr. Philip Weir who will act as election officer to ensure the election is fair and transparent. • Member representatives will fill in their ballot papers anonymously and deposit these with the election officer. • Once all votes have been cast, the election officer will open the ballot papers and read out the votes cast. • The ballot paper will be checked by the recorder and the result entered into a spreadsheet which will be visible on screen to all participants. • Once all ballot papers have been opened, read out and recorded, the result will be announced and the spreadsheet signed by the election officer and the recorder.

  36. Voting Process • Only the official representative from an ADSG member organisation is entitled to vote or stand in the election. • Only one representative from each member organisation is entitled to vote. • A minimum of 20 organisations must take part in the vote for it to be a valid election. • The member representative has 5 votes. • Please cast one vote for each one of your 5 preferred candidates. • Please cast your votes by putting one tick per candidate only, against the names of the candidates you wish to elect. • If your form contains more than 5 ticks, the paper will be spoilt and will not count. • Candidates must receive a minimum of 10 votes. • The 5 candidates receiving the highest number of votes will be elected. • Candidates receiving fewer votes (but more than 10) may take a seat on the FCC in case another member drops out for any reason. • In case of a tie, or candidates not receiving the minimum number of votes, further rounds of voting may follow until all candidates have been elected.
