  3. Module info Module code: ICE1203 • Module Overview The module provides an essence of the basic fundamentals and the underlying influences of an information systems environment. The module will provide students with the knowledge and skills for understanding the organisation as a system and the environment affecting an organization's information system will be covered; with the emphasis placed on achieving organisational objectives. This includes the six salient components depicting an information systems environment: software, hardware, database, telecommunications, people and policies/strategies.

Module info • Aims and objectives This module will help student understand and appreciate the factors concerning the environment of an information systems. • Module aims The broad aims of this module are: • To demystify the influencing six components (software, hardware, database, telecommunications, people, policies/strategies) affecting the use of information systems in an organization. • To equip students with the knowledge that there are other factors, besides the technical aspects in ensuring the effective operations of information systems.

Module info • Learning objectives The main objectives of this course are to build students’ capacity to: • Differentiate between various types and structures of organization. • Deal with the functional areas of a business and the levels of information necessary to achieve organisational objectives. • Demonstrate the knowledge of the operational systems used in business and the associated documents in use. • Recognize the human behavior in organisation and recognize the relationship between individuals, groups and organisations in relation to the development of computer-based systems

Module info • Learning objectives The main objectives of this course are to build students’ capacity to: • Know the implication of introducing computer-based systems in relation to organisation, management, work group and individual. • Know the computer-based system and their components, limitations and capabilities of such systems as information processing tools. • Demonstrate the knowledge of structure, flow and processing of information within an organization. • Demonstrate an awareness of current development and applications of computer systems and to be able to appraise critically some such applications.

  11. In definition: What is information systems? An automated system that creates or manages information about an organization's activities. Includes applications whose primary purpose is to facilitate transactions between an organizational unit and its customers e.g. an e-commerce system, client relationship management system, purpose-built or customized database, finance or human resources systems. Information systems that create or manage records should have the appropriate functionally for these tasks, or they should interface with other systems that manage the records.
