  27. 01FA06 – Copeland Engineering Type of Project: Compressor Capacity Background: Copeland is a world leader in the design and manufacturing of scroll compressors for the air conditioning and refrigeration market. Description of the Project or Problem: A new design concept to increase the capacity of the compressor is to feed a portion of the high pressure vapor from the condenser coils into the compression chamber. Deliverables: This project involves the design, analysis, prototype and testing of the scroll, tubing, valves, associated hardware, etc. Being a high volume manufacturer the cost and assembly ease are extremely important factors along with performance and reliability.   28. 02FA06 – Crane Pumps Type of Project: Design and Build Background: Crane Pumps & Systems (CP&S) currently makes a wide number of pumps including: sump pumps, municipal sewage treatment pumps, boiler room pumps, marine pumps, processing plant pumps, and more used in power generating stations, paper mills, construction sites, utility maintenance fleets and even in farm fields. Description of the Project or Problem: The project is the design, build and test of an automated inspection device to assure the quality of their float level control for sewage retention stations. Each float level transducer they fabricate is 100 percent inspected before shipping. Rather than do this manually they would like to have an automated device to sense (and adjust?) the levels and determine if they have been set correctly. Deliverables: Complete design Engineering Technology

  29. 03FA06 – Hobart GFCI Type of Project: Design, fabricate, test Background: Hobart is the largest manufacturer of mixers in the U.S. Description of the Project or Problem: Hobart’s 20 Qt. mixers trip the GFCI breakers upon start. Evidentially, this is a common characteristic of variable frequency drives, but it doesn't happen with all GFCI devices. We would like to find a low-cost resolve to this issue. So far, we have looked at providing a replacement GFCI that works with the drive, isolating the motor using ceramic bearings (too expensive) and using an isolation transformer (expensive and too large). Deliverables: Review current GFCI technology Test different designs to prevent GFCI false tripping Recommend changes to current system Engineering Technology

  30. 04FA06 – Rittal Warehouse Type of Project: Storage layout for raw materials Background: The company fabricates and assembles nearly all components that go into making electronic cabinets. Description of the Project or Problem: These components are used infrequently on the custom line because each cabinet is custom built according to the end user. Extra parts made need to be stored in a warehouse until they are needed. These parts need to stay separate from the assembly line parts. Deliverables: Re-layout the assembly area Design a warehouse storage strategy Engineering Technology

  31. 05FA06 – Sonne Light Sentry • Type of Project: Design, fabricate, test • Background: Development of a new lighting control unit to be manufactured • Description of the Project or Problem: • Develop a photo sensor and a control system that can be packaged into one system. • Deliverables: • Engineering drawings of the final design. • Material Cost Estimates • Prototype for UL approval • Package Design Engineering Technology

  32. 06FA06 – WTC Type of Project: Design and Build Background: The EE department is upgrading their wafer fabrication laboratory. Description of the Project or Problem: They would like us to build them a new wafer treatment cell. A wafer treatment cell should be able to control temperature, pressure, and application of material to the wafer. Deliverables: Build a wafer treatment cell Engineering Technology
