Who:Rachel Gorwitz, M.D., M.P.H., Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Topic: “The Emergence of Community Acquired MRSA – the CDC’s response to the epidemic” When: Wednesday, February 8, 2006, 5 – 7:30 p.m. Registration begins at 4 p.m. Where: Marriott Riverfront, 10 W. At the end of this program, participants should be able to:1. Review the background information and terminology associated with CA-MRSA and how it is different from HA-MRSA. 2. Discuss outbreaks in the U.S. and how the organism can be transmitted. 3. Review community emergence and new CDC data stats. 4. Describe reasonable approaches for prevention and control w/handouts of the proposed CDC Clinical Guidelines for the evaluation and management of CA-MRSA. 5. Discuss public health Interventions. Rachel Gorwitz, M.D., M.P.H., is a medical epidemiologist for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the National Center for Infectious Diseases, Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion.She has been with the CDC for nearly 15 years in several capacities and currently works with partners in public health departments and clinical and academic medicine to develop strategies for clinical and public health management of community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and to design, conduct, and analyze studies of community transmission of MRSA. Dr. Gorwitz has also worked for the World Health Organization’s Global Programme on AIDS, developing a protocol for using rapid assessment research techniques to guide program-planning decisions in developing-country AIDS control programs, and then organizing a pilot test of this protocol in Malawi, Africa. She is board certified in pediatrics and preventative medicine and has been awarded the Outstanding Unit Citation Award for the DHHS Terrorism Response Team, and the Secretary’s Award for Distinguished Service and Crisis Response Service Award for her role in Anthrax investigation. This offering is approved for one contact hour by the Kentucky Board of Nursing, SLH provider #4-0026-07-06-117, which expiries 7/06. Successful completion of this offering includes attending the entire offering and completion of the evaluation.
