  3. A proper attitude toward sins • Many have improper attitudes toward sin – Some deny what sin is, or their sinfulness.- Some mock at sin- Some minimize or dismiss it- Many take pleasure in sinful behaviors Dealing with our sins - Forgiveness

  4. A proper attitude toward sins • We must admit our sins • 1 John 1:8, 10 • Confession part of forgiveness – 1 John 1:9, Psalm 32:1 • Proverbs 28:13, He who covers his sins will not prosper, but whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy • James 5:16 Dealing with our sins - Forgiveness

A proper attitude toward sins • We must take personal responsibility • James 1:13-15 • Many make excuses –Eve & Adam – Genesis 3:12-13Aaron – Exodus 32:21-24King Saul – 1 Samuel 15:13-15 • While others may be complicit, ultimately you answer for yourself! Realize that we do NOT have to sin. We do NOT inherit the sins of Adam Dealing with our sins - Forgiveness

  6. A proper attitude toward sins • Do we hate sin? • How much do we despise sin? • The deceptive nature of sin sometimes causes many to diminish its seriousness, or its consequences Dealing with our sins - Forgiveness

  7. A proper attitude toward sins • Do we hate sin? • What steps will we take to eliminate it? Cf. Matthew 5:29-30 • God hates sin – Proverbs 6:16-19 • Jude 22-23 – do we hate even the garments defiled by the flesh? • Psalm 97:10, You who love the LORD, hate evil. • Proverbs 8:13, The fear of the Lord is to hate evil;… Dealing with our sins - Forgiveness

  8. Appreciate who God is • Reverential fear • Hebrews 12:28-29 • Never trivialize God, or remove Him from His holy throne. • The fear of the Lord, Proverbs 1:7, 9:10, 8:13 • Romans 11:22 – His goodness and severity Dealing with our sins - Forgiveness

  9. Appreciate who God is • You cannot hide from Him • Psalm 139:7-12 • Ask Jonah what happens when you try to hide from God • Psalm 51:4 – realize when you sin, it is always against God • He is our Creator, Savior and Judge Dealing with our sins - Forgiveness

  10. Appreciate what God has done • He so loved us – John 3:16, Ephesians 2:4-8, John 1:29 • God accepted the sacrifice of Jesus – Romans 5:6-11, Acts 13:38 • Ephesians 1:7, we have redemption through His blood… Dealing with our sins - Forgiveness

Appreciate what God has done • What happens when God forgives sins? • They are blotted out,Acts 3:19 • He remembers them no more, Hebrews 8:12, 10:17 • He covers them, Romans 4:7-8 • He forgives even the chiefest of sinners, 1 Timothy 1:15 • Psalm 103:12 So many terms describe God’s forgiveness so that we ought to be humbled at the depth of His love for us – Ephesians 3:17-19 Dealing with our sins - Forgiveness

  12. Receive God’s forgiveness • Become a Christian • Hear the gospel,Mark 16:15, Romans 10:17 • Believe, Mark 16:16, John 8:24, Romans 10:10 • Repent, Acts 2:38 • Confess Him as Lord and the Son of God – Romans 10:10, cf. Acts 8:37 Dealing with our sins - Forgiveness

  13. Receive God’s forgiveness • Become a Christian • Be immersed (baptized) Acts 2:38, 22:16Romans 6:3-41 Peter 3:21Galatians 3:27 Dealing with our sins - Forgiveness

Thoughts about forgiveness • We need to forgive ourselves – if God can forgive us, accept it and forgive ourselves – James 1:6-8; cf. 2 Corinthians 2:6-7 don’t cause one to become overwhelmed • 1 Timothy 1:12-14, Philippians 3:13 – Paul accepted forgiveness Dealing with our sins - Forgiveness

  16. Thoughts about forgiveness • We MUST forgive others – Matthew 6:14-15Mark 11:25-26Ephesians 4:32James 2:13 • We can never out-forgive God Dealing with our sins - Forgiveness

  17. Thoughts about forgiveness • Forgiveness does not remove consequences – Consider David’s sin with Bathsheba cf. Matthew 19:9 • Forgiveness does not remove desires – we will still be tempted cf. 1 Corinthians 9:27 Dealing with our sins - Forgiveness
