  6. FIRST YEAR SUCCESS The First Year Success (FYS) system is designed to improve learning for new students during their first year of college in efforts to assist them in achieving academic and personal success.

  7. FOUR COMPONENTS Recognizing that most students need additional assistance as they transition to college, the comprehensive system includes four components: Orientation Student Development (SDV) Courses Family & Friends Information Sessions Academic Alert http://www.tcc.edu/firstyearsuccess/

  8. ORIENTATION TOPICS INCLUDES: 1. Support Services 2. Financial Services 3. Student Rights & Responsibilities 4. Academic Requirements 5. Enrollment Instructions 6. Online Assessment and Evaluation GETTING STARTED RIGHT! New students participate in a face-to-face or online orientation after completing the placement test and prior to enrolling.

  9. SDV COURSES SDV Courses promote student success by assisting students with their transition into college. All new students should complete one of the SDV courses during their first 15 credit hours. TOPICS INCLUDE: Career Exploration and Development College Resources and Policies Academic Planning Study Skills Life Management

  10. FAMILY & FRIENDS Family & Friends Information Sessions provide an opportunity for those individuals who are important in the lives of our students to learn more about their transition to TCCand help them achieve their individual goals.

  11. ACADEMIC ALERT Academic Alert is designed to improve learning for students and assist them in achieving success by connecting them with appropriate campus resources and services. Web-based referral program for students experiencing academic difficulties. When a faculty member submits a referral, the identified student automatically receives an email notification listing suggested services based on the academic concerns.

Of the 4956 Fall 2012 first-time curricular-placed students (not including students in career studies certificate programs) • 65.0% of those who DID attend Orientation, completed SDV by the end of the fall semester • 37.0% of those that DID NOT attend Orientation, completed SDV by the end of the fall semester

  17. SDV 100 Assessment INSTRUCTIONS Welcome to the Student Assessment for SDV 100. We appreciate you taking the time to complete the entire assessment. The results will help us understand what you have learned during the course and will be used to improve student learning. Therefore, it is important that you answer all questions as carefully as possible. The assessment has 6 parts and you must complete all 6 parts. The first five parts consist of multiple choice questions and each may take about 5 minutes to complete. Part 6 asks you to describe what you liked and did not like about your SDV course. We encourage you to provide some suggestions for improvements to the course. When you complete the entire assessment, please click on the Your Results tab to the left and provide a copy to your instructor.
