  3. FIBERS A look at fashion materials • Fiber is an elongated tapering thick-walled plant cell that imparts elasticity, flexibility, and tensile strength. • A Fiber can be spun into filaments, string, or rope, used as a component of composite materials, or matted into sheets to make products such as paper or felt.

  4. Produced by plants and animals and geological processes. Vegetable Wood Animal Mineral Comes from synthetic materials such as Petrochemicals. Cellulose fibers Rayon Modal Lyocell Types of Fibers Natural Fibers vs. Synthetic Fibers ____________________________

  5. Sublet of man-made fiber Polyamide nylon Acrylic polyesters – wool replacement Elastomers - spandex Polyurethane Textiles refer to sub-denier fiber Ultra fine fibers Denier Detex Types of FibersCont’d Polymer Fibers vs. Microfibers ____________________________

  6. Fabrics A look at fashion materials Cont’d • A fabric is a textile material, short for "textile fabric” • Fabric refers to any material made through weaving, knitting, spreading or bonding in the production of further goods • There are thousands of fabric types

  8. Design Elements and Principles Put it together and what do you get… • The principles of design describe how the elements of design come together to create a design. • The design elements and principles combine to create one piece of art. • The best designers sometimes disregard the principles of design.

  9. Design Elements Creating Visual Imagery… ___________________________________ • Lines: A fundamental mark or stroke used in drawing in which the length is longer than the width. • Colors: Guidance and emphasis of design to create drastic contrast. • Shapes: An area that stands out from the space next to or around it due to a defined or implied boundary. • Texture (visual arts): The way a surface feels or is perceived to feelby the observer. • Space: The area the design will take place on.

  10. Principles of Design The fundamental element behind Fashion… ___________________________________ Unity: design is considered unified. No individual part is viewed as more important than the whole design. A good balance between unity and variety must be established to avoid a chaotic or a lifeless design. Point Line and Plane: PLP are the three most basic shapes in visual design and a good design contains all three. The key to using PLP is making the shapes overlap and share elements.

  11. ____________________________ Principle of DesignCont’d • Balance: a state of equalized tension and equilibrium • Hierarchy: elements that lead the reader through each element in order of its significance. • Scale: the relative size of elements against each other can attract attention to a focal point. • Dominance: contrasting size, positioning, color, style, or shape. The focal point

  12. Principles of Design Cont’d ____________________________ • Similarity and Contrast: Planning a consistent and similar design to achieve dramatic contrasts, scrupulous similarity, and active white space • Movement and Pattern Implying that an object is moving in a direction through space of the page. --Movement seems more dynamic when depth is implied--
