Growth by mid-60s • “War on Poverty” (championed by Michael Harrington) • Gets Economic Opportunity Act Passed (creates OEO= Office of Economic Opportunity) • Job Corps, VISTA, youth jobs, rural and urban development, work-study programs, Head Start • Gets Civil Rights Act of 1964 passed • EEOC = no job discrimination • Title VII = no discrimination against sex! (women = )

Immigration Act of 1965 • Ended quotas (First major immigration act, and reversed, the 1924 (National Origins Act, which had limmited people from certain countries, dating back to 1890 quotas) • 20k in per country • “refugees” • EFFECT = high volume immigration, more immigrants from Korea, China, Phil., Dom. Rep., Cambodia and Middle East

Great Society? • Believed to cut Poverty in 1/3rd • Incredible spending by govt. • Created continued debate over federal powers expanding (more of the New Deal?) • “show down on the battlefields of Vietnam” – MLK, Jr. • Great success with Civil Rights Acts • Ultimate, irony is the Vietnam War ended up costing LBJ the “Great Society”!
