  9. CHAMPIONSHIP BEHAVIOR

  10. CODE OF CONDUCT Wamogo High School officials, coaches of athletic teams and sponsors of student activities believe that students who are selected for the privilege of membership on teams, squads, performing groups, clubs and other school organizations should conduct themselves as responsible representatives of the school. In order to assure this conduct, coaches and sponsors enforce a Code of Conduct. Members of teams and organizations who fail to abide by the Code of Conduct are subject to disciplinary action. Furthermore, members of teams and organizations must always serve as exemplars of high moral character and must demonstrate appropriate academic commitment, which is expected from all students. As recognized representatives of Wamogo, members are expected to exhibit appropriate behavior during the entire school year, in uniform or out of uniform, on campus or off campus.

  11. Objectives of The Wamogo Athletic Program • The athlete learns the value of teamwork, self-discipline, development of a strong work ethic and personal sacrifice. • The athlete learns to be a good sport while developing self-control, honesty and a spirit of cooperation. • The athlete learns to be a good winner as well as a gracious loser in defeat. • The athlete learns to appreciate the skills and abilities of his/her opponents. • The athlete learns an appreciation of playing by given rules. • The athlete learns the value of physical fitness that leads to a sound body healthy mind and life long health habits. • The athlete learns, in a positive manner, to cope with the competitive nature of athletics and society.

  12. SPORTSMANSHIP • We expect our athletes and our coaches to exhibit good sportsmanship • Our parents and spectators are expected to treat the officials, opponents and each other with respect. • Our goal as a program is to win as many sportsmanship plaques as we can in each sport by practicing good sportsmanship on the field and as well as both sets of sidelines.

  13. CODE OF CONDUCT EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES AND EDUCATION • To be eligible for a fall sports, a student must have received credit toward graduation at the close of the school year preceding the contest in at least 4 Carnegie Units of work or its equivalent for which he or she has not previously received credit. • A student can not represent a school unless they are taking at least 4 Carnegie Units of work or it equivalent. • During the school year a student must have received a passing mark in at least 4 Carnegie Units of work or its equivalent at the end of the regular marking period next preceding the contest. • Student eligibility is determined for all students on the date that report cards are distributed.

  14. REGION 6 ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS • All athletes must maintain at 73 average. A student whose average is not at least a 73 will be permitted to participate on probationary status until progress reports or report cards are issued, whichever comes first. • If a student has less than a 73 average two consecutive reporting periods, they will not be able to participate or play. • Any student receiving an F in any course is automatically put on probation and must demonstrate a passing grade by the next reporting period. • Students are expected to be in school a minimum of 4 hours in order to participate in games or practices unless excused by the administration or athletic director.

  15. TRAINING RULES • All student use of tobacco product, alcoholic beverages, anabolic steroids, or possession or use of non-prescribed controlled substances or paraphernalia will not be tolerated and the violator will be subject to immediate removal from the team. • Student athletes are prohibited from hosting/attending a party that involves alcohol, drugs or other controlled substances. If an athlete attends a party and finds this type of activity taking place, they should make arrangements to leave immediately. • Internet: there shall be no internet reference (written or pictorial) to the use of illegal substances on websites such as Facebook or MySpace. • Students are cautioned to not use highly caffeinated energy drinks as a substitution for good nutritional practices.

  16. BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS • Each coach has the prerogative to establish additional team rules pertaining to their activity. These rules may include attendance at practices, curfew, dress and general conduct of participants during practices, contests and trips. • Students suspended from school by administration will not be allowed to participate in activities or athletics while on suspension. • School officials are not expected to police off campus non-school activities unless the violation has brought public attention, is sufficiently severe to bring discredit upon the Wamogo organization, and is clearly proven. • All student athletes MUST participate in all physical education activities during PE class. Student-athletes are expected to perform all activities regardless of practice or game commitments. Failure to participate means the athlete will be unable to practice or compete on that day. • Wamogo coaches will not tolerate and strictly prohibit student athletes engaging in any type of ‘initiation ceremony’ or hazing of athletes at any time. Parents who are concerned this type of behavior is taking place should contact the athletic director immediately.

  17. BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS • Wamogo athletes are held to a high standard of behavior in the building. We want them to act as role models for the entire student body. Students referred to the office for classroom infractions will be disciplined by the administration. If such discipline results in a suspension from school, the athlete will not be permitted to participate in the next game or contest even if their suspension resulted in a missed game or contest. • Coaches who discipline athletes by benching will be required to notify parents and the administration of this decision unless said decision is made at or during game time. This does not apply to decisions regarding lineups or playing time. • If a teacher notifies a coach of a behavior issue in their class, coaches will speak to athletes about improving their performance in that class. Any further discipline will be handled by the administration. • Athletes are expected to act appropriately after school. They are to remain in the cafeteria or library media center until practices begins. • PDA’s – appropriate behavior is expected at all times with couples while waiting for practices/games and while in uniform. The rule of thumb is ‘do not do anything in public with your girlfriend or boyfriend that you would not do in front of your mother or father’.

  18. INJURIES/INSURANCE/TRAINER • Students should report injuries immediately to their coach. • Injury evaluations can be arranged at The Hills Physical Therapy facility in Bantam. • Head Injuries – if your athlete sustains any type of blow to the head you will be contacted by a coach. • Trainers will be available at some of our home contests by Athletic Trainer Solutions. • Wamogo carries a secondary insurance policy that picks up additional costs not covered by your own policy. Forms are available from the athletic director. • Athletes that are removed form practicing/playing by a doctor must be reinstated by a doctor.

  19. CHAIN OF COMMAND • Problems should be handled at the coach/athlete level if at all possible. • Parents should schedule a time to meet with a coach to discuss concerns. After a game is not a good time. • If a parent is not satisfied with the conversation/meeting with the coach they should contact the Athletic Director. • If they are still dissatisfied, they should and will be encouraged to contact the principal.

  20. ODDS N ENDS • Athletes may not be recruited by NCAA Division I or II schools unless they are registered with the NCAA Clearinghouse. • Student athletes must be taking college prep courses in order to meet NCAA standards. • Vacations – Only family vacations will be recognized as ‘excused’ absences for practices or games. Families are asked to arrange their vacations if at all possible around athletic seasons. Practices for the fall will always start before Labor Day. Winter sports practice and have games over the Holiday and Mid Winter breaks. Spring sports have practices and games during April vacation. • Water Bottles – all athletes are asked to bring in a water bottle. Water will be supplied for all activities for refills. • Adults should not attend games if they are under the influence of alcohol. • Wamogo is a non-smoking campus. No smoking is permitted anywhere on the grounds.
