EU Road Safety communication 2011-2020 • More specifically for motorcyclists: • Improving awareness of PTW riders by other road users. • enforcement on speed, drink and driving, helmet use, tampering and riding without licence • Encouraging research and technical developments • standards for personal protective equipment • use of relevant ITS applications (e.g. eCall) • Airbags • appropriate anti-tampering measures • extend to PTWs the existing EU legislation concerning roadworthiness testing • better adapt road infrastructure to PTWs (e.g. safer guardrails)

  12. EU Road Safety communication 2011-2020 • points out that the standard guard rails used on European roads are a death trap for motorcyclists, and calls to take prompt action (including replacing the existing guard rails)

EU Road Safety communication 2011-2020 • Calls for the introduction of monitoring equipment by means of which speeding offences by motorcyclists can be systematically detected and punished; • Calls to adopt as swiftly as possible the Intelligent Transport System (ITS) specifications for priority actions relating to road safety; to draw up a proposal to fit vehicles with ‘intelligent speed assistance systems’ • Regards the phased, mandatory introduction of anti-brake-locking systems on all new motorcycles as an important measure • to make the carrying of warning jackets for all vehicle occupants compulsory

MEP Ride 2011: raising awareness • In 2011 for the first time: • The MEP Ride started in front of the EU Parliament • The MEP Ride ended at Circuit Zolder, a famous Belgian race track • The MEP Ride opened Clean Week 2020, a unique event for alternatively fuelled vehicles held on the race track in Zolder

Safety: change our image - Show our work and expertise • The EC Motorcycling Day for the Road Safety Unit • => All staff members (from administrative secretary to Head of Unit): • were shown the great variety of size, weight, style and performance of motorcycles and the relation btw cc/power • perceived to lack of conspicuity of motorcyclists and the need to raise car drivers’ awareness • Were illustrated the wide expertise from the motorcycle community • were taken on the road as pillions
