  2. What is Group 4 Project? • Project stages • Planning • Action • Evaluation • Research Question • Poster Exhibition • Young Reporters for The Environment TED Ankara College

  3. It is a collaborative activity where students from different G4 subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) work together on a scientific topic, allowing for concepts and perceptions from across the disciplines to be shared. TED Ankara College

  4. to develop and apply your information and communication technology skills (ICT) in the study of science,(Aim 7) • to raise your awareness of the moral, ethical, social, economic and environmental implications of using science and technology,(Aim 8) • to encourage an understanding of the relationships between scientific disciplines and the overarching nature of the scientific method. (Aim 10) TED Ankara College

  5. Decide the main focus, make sure that all the subjects are included. • Decide which practical activities they will carry out and what equipment they will need… they should communicate the to the appropriate science technician and teacher. • Keep communicating among theirselves… they need to let others in their group know how their part of the project is going! TED Ankara College

  6. 10 hour activity is allocated to the G4 project which can be divided into three stages: • Planning (2 hrs) • Action (6 hrs) • Evaluation (2 hrs) TED Ankara College

  7. Since we have large group of IB students. The subject will be selected by science teachers. • Then, you must decide what subtitle that you will study during G4 project. The subtitles of the three subjects (Physics, Chemistry and Biology) must be as related as possible. TED Ankara College

  8. Allinvestigationsshould be simpleenoughto be carriedout in schoollabconditions. Next, theactivitiesthatwill be carriedoutmust be clearlydefinedbeforemovingfrom the planning stage to the action and evaluation stages. At theexperimentalstage, apparatus should be specified so that there is no delay in carrying out the action stage. TED Ankara College

  9. Planning • There are 229 IB students. • Each group must consist of 7 students • At least one student must be from Turkish-Mathematics (TM) track. • It is your responsibility to build your groups. • Each group will have a team leader. • Team leader is responsible for coordination but not doing all the work. TED Ankara College

  10. Clear • Sharply focused • Should be answerable • Arguable TED Ankara College

  11. Unclear: Does concententration affect the rate of chemical reaction? Unfocused: What are the the factors affecting the rate of a chemical reactions? Too simple : How does the temperature affect the rate of a chemical reaction? TED Ankara College

  12. Too broadRQs • Unclear RQs. • Multiple RQs. • RQ which does not lead to a systematic investigation. TED Ankara College

  13. TED Ankara College

  14. Assume a school selects the Gr 4 Project to be Energy • Assume a group picked the subtitle "Light energy“ TED Ankara College

  15. In Physics, students are investigating “how is the angle of deflection affects the rate of photosynthesis of Elodea canadensis”. • The correct form of the RQ is; “how does the angle of light deflection affects the rate of photosynthesis of Elodea canadensis by measuring the volume of produced oxygen gas” . TED Ankara College

  16. In Chemistry, students are investigating “how does the exposure to light affect the Vitamin C in orange juice by determining the vitamin C content by titrating it with iodine solution.” • The correct form of the RQ is; “how does the timeof exposure to sunlight affect the decomposition of Vitamin C in orange juice by determining the vitamin C content by titrating it with iodine solution.” TED Ankara College

  17. In Biology , students are investigating “how does light affect the rate of photosynthesis, by counting the number of produced oxygen bubbles” • The correct form of the RQ is; “how do different wavelengths of light affect the rate of photosynthesis of Elodea canadensis, by counting the number of produced oxygen gas bubbles” TED Ankara College

  18. How a subtitle can be relatedwith G4 subjects? Here is an example from G4 project of previous years: The school topic was choosen to be “Water.“ A group of students picked the subtitle “Conductivity of Water" TED Ankara College

  19. In Biology, students investigated “How does the type of water affect the transport in xylem of celery which is indicated by the height of water at a certain temperature and pressure?” In Chemistry, students investigated “How does the concentration of sodium cloride (NaCl) affect the volume of hydrogen collected during electrolysis process?” In Physics, students investigated “How does the type of water affect the conductivity of water indicated by the potential difference that is shown in voltmeter using a simple electric circuit and metal plates?” TED Ankara College

  20. TED Ankara College

  21. TED Ankara College

  22. It is carried out over one and a half day total for all G4 subjects in normal scheduled class time . • Half day (4 hours) for Physics • Half day (4 hours) for Chemistry • Half day (4 hours) for Biology TED Ankara College

  23. Goup 4 approval sheet was prepared to let the you know about the deadlines for: • First draft • Approved draft • Data collection • Final essay TED Ankara College

  24. TED Ankara College

  25. TED Ankara College

  26. Students will be evaluated on the PERSONAL SKILLS criteria. • Self-motivation and follow-through to completion • Work with others in a group situation and integrate the views of others • Self-reflection of their own strengths and weaknesses and how they put theirself outside their comfort zone TED Ankara College

  27. Accepted responsibility to contribute to the team • Encouraged the contributions of others • Recognized the contributions of others • Showed self-motivation • Showed ethical behavior in personal relations and reporting results • Paid attention to environmental impacts TED Ankara College

  29. TED Ankara College

  30. At theend of the G4 Project : • Youareresponsibeforpreparing a poster whichsummarizesyourworking. • Youareexpectedtowrite an articleto be published in thejournal of YRE. ( OPTIONAL) • YouareNOTresponsibleforpreparing an investigationreportsuch as D, DCP or CE. TED Ankara College

  31. How to prepare a POSTER? • List all of the things that you want to say, and put them in the order of importance. • Remember that this is a poster to give a quick overview of your research. • Plan on limited text and strong images in the poster. TED Ankara College

  33. Young Reporters for the Environment (YRE) is a network of international youth engaged in environmental journalism and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). It is coordinated by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) and operates in more than 25 countries. http://www.youngreporters.org/ TED Ankara College

  34. The purpose in writing this article is not explaining the process or result of the experiment. The purpose is to explain the conclusion of the experiment by relating it with the environmental implications in an attractive way as a journalist. TED Ankara College

  35. It’s the student’s job ; • to convince the readers that they should read the article from beginning to the end. • to take them by the hand, • to seduce them, • to guide them along the text and leave them with a good feeling. • to get the attention of the readers. TED Ankara College

  36. KITCHEN SPORTS WASTES TED Ankara College

  37. Pick only one of the subjects listed • Determine a subtitle • Relate all your experiments to this subtitle. TED Ankara College
