  1. POM - 0 (Plop, Plop, Fizz, Fizz) Background Antacid tablets are supposed to reduce heartburn. They work by soaking up some of the acid in your stomach. The tablets also produce carbon dioxide (a gas) as they dissolve. When the antacid mixes with water and it changes to carbon dioxide it is called a chemical reaction. During the chemical reaction the acid is neutralized (changed).

  2. POM - 0 (page 2) Manipulated Variable: (Identify the ONE characteristic that you plan to change.) Responding Variable: (Describe how you will measure the response to the manipulated variable.) Controlled Variable: (List at least 5 things you plan to keep the same to during your investigation.)

  3. POM - 0 (page 3) Problem Statement: (State the question you will be investigating.) • How does (MV) affect (RV)? • What is the effect of (MV) on (RV)? Hypothesis: (Make a prediction and state a reason.) • Avoid using “I think..” • Try using “If (MV) then (RV) because (reason).”

  4. POM - 0 (page 4) Materials: (Make a list of the items you will need to do the experiment.) • 2 (250ml) beakers • (100ml) graduated cylinder • Stopwatch • Thermometer • 3 Tablets • Water (Ice, room temp, hot)

  5. POM-0 (page 5) Procedures: • Fill beaker with 100ml of room temp water. • Take tablet out of the wrapper and drop the tablet into the beaker of water. • Start timing when tablet enters the water. • Stop timing when no new bubbles are produced. • Record your time measurements. • Repeat steps 1-5 two more times. • (Your additional steps go here)

  6. POM-0 (page 6) Procedures: • Using numbers to indicate the steps, describe how you will do this experiment. • Write the instructions so someone else could do the experiment for you. • Include repeat trials minimize errors. • Make sure to include instructions to ‘Record’ data.

  7. POM - 0 (page 7) Data Table: (Organize your data in a table. See Mr. Smith’s example.) (Have your lab set up checked by Mr. Smith. Then go do the experiment.)

  8. POM - 0 (page 8) Calculate the average of your data. Conclusion: • In the first (complete) sentence, answer your problem statement. • Support your conclusion, with specific data from the experiment (high & low average). • Clearly explain how your data supports the conclusion (use a comparison.

  9. POM-0 Grading (15 pts) • Table of Contents (1 pt) • Title (1 pt) • All 3 Variables (1 pt) • Problem Statement (1 pt) • Hypothesis (2 pt) • Materials (1 pt) • Procedures (3 pt) • Data Table (1 pt) • Conclusion (4 pt)
