  1. The Colonists Come to America

  2. Why did the Colonists come to America? • Settlers came for many reasons: adventure, to make money, for religious reasons, or because they were forced.

  3. What do “push” and “pull” factors mean? • Push: Things that are “pushing” people out of Europe and to America. Examples: Religious tension, overcrowded areas. • Pull: Things that are “pulling” people toward America. Ex: Business opportunities

  4. Why did people want out of Europe? • Europe was very overcrowded; The Americas were vast and unsettled. There was cheap land available so it was easy to settle there. • New Religious groups formed in Europe, creating great conflict and turmoil. People were fined, thrown in jail or even killed over a religious belief.

  5. What is an indentured servant? • An indentured servant is a person with no money that signs a contract to work for several years in exchange for transportation to a colony. • When his term was up, his reward was “freedom dues” which was things like money, tools, or land to start his own farm.

  6. What religious opportunities did the Americas offer? • Many saw the new world as a place to build a better society than Europe. • The Puritans settled in New England and strived to practice a purer, simpler form of Christianity.

  7. What was the Protestant Reformation? • It was a direct assault on the teachings of the Catholic Church. Many religious leaders like Martin Luther began teaching different things. • This led to upset Catholic leaders and Political leaders.

  8. Write your summary • What do you think was the biggest factor that led to colonization?
