  2. I. The land and climate of Africa • A. Africa is the 2nd largest continent • B. There are several geographical zones • 1. Mountainous- along the Mediterranean coast • 2. Sahara- Earth’s largest desert • 3. Grasslands- SW of the Sahara

  3. 4. Tropical jungle- the north part jutting into the Atlantic Ocean • 5. Great Rift Valley- to the East • 6. Congo Basin- in the south, an area of dense vegetation which the Congo river runs through

  4. C. 4 distinct climate zones • 1. Mild climate- moderate rainfall and mild temps • 2. Sahara in the North and Kalihari in the South are desert • 3. Rain forest along the equator and little farming • 4. Savannas are N and S of the rainforest, broad grasslands

  5. II. Emerging Civilization and the Rise of Islam • A. Kush: Civilization around 1000 BC that developed out of Egypt • 1. Economy based on farming • 2. Made Iron tools and weapons • 3. Major trading empire

  6. B. Axum: Conquered the Kush in the 4th century BC • 1. Located on the Red Sea trading route • 2. By 330 Axum was Christian • 3. Exported Ivory and Slaves • 4. By 12th century, Arab controlled Muslim states fought Christian Axum for control of Ivory and slave trade
