  1. Ch 2 Termsand equation manipulation

  2. Chapter title is mechanical equilibrium In your own words – explain equilibrium In physics – the equilibrium we are talking about is the balancing of forces, the net force is zero What is a force? Net force? Describe a situation in which forces are in equilibrium.

  3. Is it in equilibrium or not? Examples: draw the forces acting on each object Book resting on a table? yes Car traveling at a constant speed of 60 mph? yes Car accelerating from 0 mph to 60 mph? no Car traveling in a circle at 30 mph? no

  4. The lines we drew representing forces are called vectors Vectors are quantities we measure in which the magnitude and direction are important. Think of some examples. Try these: Mass Temperature Volume Speed Force Distance time

  5. Scalars have magnitude but don’t have direction, vectors have magnitude and direction. Here are some similar but different terms Speed – scalar Velocity – vector Distance – scalar Displacement – vector End here – begin how to take directed notes

  6. Equation manipulation and trig functions It is important that you be able to manipulate equations in physics. Lets try a few Density = m/v solve for volume Ideal gas law equation PV = nRT solve for n

  7. You get an equation sheet Please add these equations to the equation sheet Trig functions are not on the sheet – go ahead and add them • Trig Functions

  8. Review the equation sheet S = speed Vo = Vi = original or initial velocity Vx or Vy = x refers to x axis, y to the y axis • = change in • = sum of Dx refers to change in displacement You may not need all the equations on this chart. Right now we are just concerned with the top left column – for several weeks at least

  9. Equations tell us relationships Consider F = ma, force = mass x acceleration If the mass stays the same, what is the relationship between force and acceleration? Proportional? Inversely proportional? Make up some numbers, produce a graph with at least 4 points to justify your answer. What is the relationship between mass and acceleration if force is constant? Graph and justify your answer. Develop a summary statement or guideline that would enable you to state the relationship without making a graph to figure it out

  10. Quiz A practice Ch 2 Physics Standard Equation Quiz Practice Solve this equation for a. 2. What is the relationship between E and m? 3. If m stays constant, what would happen to the energy (E) if the velocity (v) doubles?

  11. 4. What is the resultant of the addition of a vector 3 m north and 8 m E? (show equation, numbers, result) 5. What is the angle and direction of the resultant in #2? (show equation, numbers, result)

  12. Quiz A practice Ch 2 Physics Standard Equation Quiz Practice Solve this equation for 2. What is the relationship between E and m? proportional 3. If m stays constant, what would happen to the energy (E) if the velocity (v) doubles? E would increase by 4X

  13. 4. What is the resultant of the addition of a vector 3 m north and 8 m E? (show equation, numbers, result) 8.54 m 5. What is the angle and direction of the resultant in #2? (show equation, numbers, result) 20.6o N of E
