  2. Edward Mills Purcell • Edward M. Purcell was born on August 30, 1912, in Taylorville, Illinois. • He went to school in a Taylorville, Illinois. • In 1929, entered Purdue University in Indiana. • In 1933, graduated from Purdue University in electrical engineering.

  3. He had tried valiantly to regain his strength after suffering leg fractures in a fall in 1996 • Recurring bacterial lung infections requiring extended hospitalizations repeatedly set back his recovery. • Died on March 7, 1997, of respiratory failure at his home in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

  4. Significance in the physics world • In 1945, discovery of nuclear magnetic resonant absorption (NMR). • In 1951 his successful detection with Harold I. Ewan of the emission of radiation at 1421 MHz. • Each of these discoveries has led to an huge range of developments. • Purcell made ingenious contributions in biophysics

  5. comprehensive theory of nuclear magnetic relaxation • explanations of the absorption and scattering of starlight by interstellar grains. • Purcell was a past president of the American Physical Society

  6. Interesting and relevant facts • Has two younger brothers • His father, Edward A. Purcell, was manager of the local telephone exchange in Taylorville. • Ed's mother, Elizabeth Mills Purcell, taught Latin in the Taylorville high school. • Ed graduated from Purdue University in the spring of 1933 with the B.S.E.E. degree.

  7. He was inspired by the elegant articles in the Bell System Technical Journal. • Purcell was a past president of the American Physical Society • During the war Purcell headed the group working on very short wavelength radar at the MIT Radiation Laboratory • In 1945 Purcell observed nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR),
