  2. Early Life • Born 1887 in Jamaica. • He was the only child in his family. • He was an admirer of Booker T. Washington. • He immigrated to Harlem when he was 28. • When he arrived in America, he became a Black Nationalist.

  3. Life Story • Marcus had no children. • Marcus lived in Jamaica. • He advocated the Back to Africa movement and started a shipping company called Black Star Line. • Marcus was the leader of Universal Negro Improvement Association. • Over a million people joined his organization in 3 years.

  4. Accomplishments • Marcus Garvey was known for fighting for freedom. • His political goal was to take Africa back from European. • The Negro World was the U.N.I.A weekly newspaper founded in 1918. • For him, Africa was the ancestral home and spiritual base for all people.

  5. Legacy • Garvey left a legacy of racial pride. • He died in 1940.
