NIHR Evaluation, Trials and Studies Coordinating Centre • Established 2008 at the University of Southampton (incorporated NCCHTA) • Funded by the NIHR to manage 5 research programmes • HTA - largest and longest running of the DH’s national research programmes • Identifying and assessing the importance of questions to the NHS and public health communities Also: • Commissions technology assessment research for NICE on behalf of DoH • Manages funding for UKCRC registered Clinical Trials Units

  7. Efficacy & Mechanism Evaluation Programme Supports science-driven studies with an expectation of substantial health gain – aims to support excellent clinical science with an ultimate view of improving health or patient care.

  8. Efficacy & Mechanism Evaluation Programme • Clinical efficacy of functional strength training for upper limb motor recovery early after stroke: neural correlates and prognostic indicators • Pragmatic randomised trial of PhysioDirect telephone assessment and advice services for physiotherapy

  9. Health Technology Assessment Programme Funds research to ensure that healthcare professionals, NHS managers, patients and the public have the best and latest information on the costs, effectiveness and impact of developments in health technology

  10. Health Technology Assessment Programme • Developing a multidisciplinary rehabilitation package following hip fracture • The effects of a comprehensive physiotherapy intervention for adults with joint hypermobility
